The advice of your pharmacist on the treatment of bronchopulmonary diseases

When to worry about a cough?

Coughing is a natural bodily mechanism used to purify the airways of inhaled impurities. It is usually due to an irritation which can be located throughout the respiratory tract: the trachea, the bronchi. In bronchitis, the cough is generally first "dry" then becomes oily in a few days. But during a winter respiratory illness, the cough can be “mixed”: sometimes dry, sometimes oily, depending on the time. After such a viral episode, the cough continues for 3 to 8 weeks while the disease is cured, because the mucous membrane of the respiratory tree has been weakened: it is called "post-infectious" and "sub-acute".

How to treat aiuë bronchitis

  • Antipyretics in case of fever;
  • Bed rest;
  • Humidification of the air, plenty of drinks;
  • A cough sedative in the dry cough phase but this type of treatment is prescribed less and less because it is considered to be ineffective;
  • A wet phase fluidizer. There again, there is no consensus on their effectiveness;
  • An antibiotic only when bronchitis occurs on a fragile ground (chronic respiratory failure, young child, elderly person, diabetic etc ...).
