Advice from your pharmacist on the transmission of skin fungal infections

How to Treat a Skin Fungal Infection

Treatment for skin fungal infections involves topical antifungal medication. For skin fungal infections, it is prescribed in the form of an ointment, such as Mycoapaisyl 1% cream, which contains the topical antifungal agent econazole.

How skin fungal infections are transmitted

Fungal infections are caused by tiny fungi, microorganisms found everywhere. Some can grow on the outer layer of the skin, and their growth is accelerated by warm, humid conditions.
The most common of these microscopic fungi is Candida albicans. It normally lives in balance with the skin, but under certain circumstances, it overgrows and causes symptoms. For this reason, it is often referred to as “cutaneous candidiasis” or a “candidal infection.”
Transmission occurs through direct contact with surfaces or objects carrying the fungus (e.g., gym floors, showers, or swimming pools; hotel carpets; wooden benches in saunas).
It is also known that people with circulatory disorders may be more susceptible to fungal infections. Similarly, certain medications that weaken the immune system may increase the risk of this type of infection.
