When should you use this sugar-free cough syrup?
Puressentiel Respiratory Sugar-Free Cough Syrup is a syrup made with vegetable glycerin (18.38%), marshmallow root extract (1.10%), dried primrose root extract (0.36%), and thyme extract. By coating the throat, it forms a soothing, mucoadhesive film that acts as a protective barrier. It can be used for productive coughs as well as dry, irritative, or allergic coughs. It rounds out our selection of syrups and respiratory care products.
A dry cough produces no phlegm and irritates the throat with every coughing fit, which perpetuates the urge to cough. The syrup relieves dry and irritating coughs and helps reduce associated discomfort, particularly that tickling sensation in the throat that triggers coughing at night or in a heated room.
With a productive cough, the problem is the opposite: thick mucus that’s hard to clear. The syrup increases the hydration and fluidity of the mucus, making it easier to cough up naturally, without blocking the cough reflex—which is actually meant to clear the bronchi.
It also helps with a sore throat, as it rehydrates and soothes the inflamed mucous membrane. In cases of an allergic cough or a cough related to gastroesophageal reflux, the protective film it forms on the throat limits contact with irritants. Its cherry-lemon flavor makes it easy to take, for both children and adults.
During a coughing episode, it’s also important to monitor body temperature, and a reliable reading is better than just placing a hand on the forehead. For this, we recommend the Vitadomia Oxypharm non-contact infrared thermometer, which takes a forehead temperature in one second without waking a sleeping child.

Precautions
- Before giving this product to a child under three years of age, consult a doctor.
- Do not use if you have an allergy, intolerance, or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients, particularly thyme or other plants in the same family (mint, rosemary, lavender, sage), primrose, marshmallow, or lemon.
- Hereditary fructose intolerance: Do not use without consulting a doctor, as the formula contains sorbitol.
- Xylitol and sorbitol may have a laxative effect if consumed in excess: follow the recommended doses, especially in children.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Not recommended due to insufficient data.
- Gastritis or stomach ulcers: Consult a doctor or pharmacist before use.
- Marshmallow may slow the absorption of a medication taken at the same time: space out the intake of the syrup by at least one hour from that of any other medication.
- In cases of a productive cough, do not combine this syrup with a cough suppressant—which inhibits the cough reflex—without consulting a doctor or pharmacist.
- Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or any other managed respiratory condition: Consult a doctor before use.
- Consult a doctor if the cough persists for more than 5 days, if it is accompanied by fever, shortness of breath, wheezing, chest pain, colored or bloody sputum, or if it occurs in an infant.
- Do not use if the packaging is not intact.
- Store in the original packaging at room temperature, away from light. Once opened, the syrup can be kept for 3 months. Keep out of reach of children and pets: xylitol is toxic to dogs.

Our expert advice on this sugar-free cough syrup
The most common instinct is to try to suppress a productive cough. This is a mistake to avoid: the cough clears the bronchial tubes, and this syrup helps it do so without suppressing it. To ensure the protective film remains in place, wait a few minutes before drinking anything after taking the syrup. On the other hand, drink plenty of fluids for the rest of the day: mucus thins out more effectively when you’re well-hydrated.
A cough syrup is meant to treat a common cough; it is not a substitute for a diagnosis. Among the precautions, the timing of your doctor’s visit is the most important: a cough that persists, interferes with breathing, or recurs every night warrants medical attention, even if the syrup provides temporary relief.
FAQ
Can I take Puressentiel Respiratory Sugar-Free Cough Syrup if I have diabetes?
Its formula contains no sugar: its sweet taste comes from xylitol and sorbitol, two polyols that have a minimal effect on blood sugar levels. When taken at the recommended doses, it is therefore suitable for people with diabetes, though regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is still necessary during an infectious episode.
What is the difference between Puressentiel Sugar-Free Respiratory Cough Syrup and Puressentiel 125 ml Aromatherapy Respiratory Cough Syrup?
These are two products with different classifications. The 125 ml Respiratory Cough Syrup is a dietary supplement that combines plant extracts, propolis, honey, and essential oils of eucalyptus, rosemary, and peppermint. The Sugar-Free Cough Syrup is a medical device—free of sugar, honey, and propolis—that forms a protective film over the throat.
Should I choose Puressentiel Respiratory Sugar-Free Cough Syrup or Puressentiel Respiratory Children’s Cough Syrup 140 ml for my child?
The Children’s Cough Syrup is also based on marshmallow, but it is sweetened with cane sugar and honey, has a strawberry flavor, and is intended for children as young as 1 year old. The Sugar-Free Cough Syrup is intended for use in the age groups specified in its instructions and is better suited for children for whom sugar intake needs to be limited—for example, to protect their teeth when taken multiple times a day.
