When should Sollievo Soft be used to support bowel function?

Sollievo Soft is a pineapple-flavored dietary supplement in granule form that dissolves in water. Each packet contains psyllium husk (Plantago ovata), oat husk, caraway fruit, a dry extract of mallow leaves, and a small amount of stevia leaf. This blend of herbs and fiber provides 3 g of fiber per packet: the formula is high in fiber.

Psyllium is the key ingredient in the formula. Its husk absorbs water and forms a soft gel in the intestine, adding bulk and softness to intestinal contents. This is how psyllium promotes regular bowel movements and helps maintain good intestinal health. Oat bran complements this source of plant fiber.

Mallow, a plant rich in mucilage, is combined with ispaghul to support the natural rhythm of the intestines: it promotes regular bowel movements. Caraway, a small aromatic fruit from the fennel and anise family, rounds out the formula. Sollievo Soft thus takes its place among plant- and fiber-based dietary supplements for bowel regularity.

Sollievo Soft is intended for adults whose bowel movements become irregular due to changes in routine, such as travel, a diet low in fruits and vegetables, or a temporary sedentary lifestyle. It can also be given to children ages 4 and up, at a reduced dose. The individual sachet format fits easily into a bag and can be prepared in just a few seconds with a simple glass of water.

We recommend combining it with Nutergia’s Ergyphilus Confort. The two products work on different aspects of intestinal balance: Sollievo Soft provides fiber that adds bulk to intestinal contents, while Ergyphilus Confort provides five strains of lactic acid bacteria. Take them at different times of the day.

Precautions

  • Do not exceed the recommended doses. Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a varied and balanced diet and should be used as part of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Always take the packet with the recommended amount of liquid. If swallowed with too little liquid, the bulking fibers may swell in the throat or esophagus and cause a sensation of choking, or even an obstruction of the esophagus or intestine.
  • Do not take immediately before bedtime or while lying down.
  • Do not use if you have difficulty swallowing, esophageal disease, narrowing of the digestive tract, confirmed or suspected intestinal obstruction, intestinal paralysis, megacolon, or fecal impaction.
  • Use is not recommended when taking other medications at the same time: fiber may delay the absorption of medications and minerals taken concurrently. If you are undergoing treatment, consult your doctor or pharmacist and allow at least two hours between taking the packet and your medication.
  • If you have diabetes: consult your doctor, as your diabetes medication may need to be adjusted. The same precaution applies if you are taking thyroid hormones.
  • Consult a doctor before use if you have experienced a sudden change in bowel habits lasting more than two weeks, blood in the stool, unexplained abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting. If bowel habits remain irregular despite taking this product, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist.
  • Elderly, frail, or bedridden patients: Consult a doctor before use.
  • Children ages 4 to 12: Use only as directed by a healthcare professional.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: This product may be used during these periods; consult your doctor or midwife before starting.
  • Allergy to ispaghul, caraway, or plants in the same family (fennel, anise, celery, cilantro, dill): Do not use. Ispaghul powder may cause sensitization upon inhalation, especially in people with allergies: empty the packet without inhaling the powder.
  • Contains oats, a grain that contains gluten. May contain traces of sesame and mustard seeds.
  • Do not combine with another psyllium-based product, another fiber supplement, or a laxative without consulting a pharmacist.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from light. Keep out of reach of children.

Our Expert Advice on Sollievo Soft for Digestive Health

With a fiber-based product, the results depend more on what’s in your glass than in the box. The first thing to keep in mind before your first dose is to be mindful of the amount of liquid you drink, and the second is the timing relative to your medications: this is what people most often forget, especially when taking the packet at breakfast along with the rest of their pills. From the start, choose a specific time of day to take the packet, separate from your other medications.

Consistency is more important than quantity: it’s better to take one packet every day at the same time than to take two packets at once after several days of missing doses. If you need two sachets every day for several weeks, talk to us about it: long-term digestive issues warrant finding the cause rather than simply increasing your intake.

FAQ

Can I take Sollievo Soft in the evening before bed, like Sollievo PhysioLax?

No. Psyllium fiber should not be taken right before bedtime: the VIDAL monograph on psyllium specifies this. Aboca does not specify a particular time of day for Sollievo Soft; the simplest approach is to choose a fixed time, separate from when you take other medications. Taking it in the evening applies to Sollievo PhysioLax, a medical device in senna-based tablets intended for ages 12 and older, not to Sollievo Soft.

How much water should I drink with a packet of Sollievo Soft?

Aboca recommends dissolving the packet in a glass of water, drinking it before the mixture turns into a gel, and then drinking an additional half-glass of water. A common guideline for psyllium seeds is at least 30 ml of liquid per gram: one packet contains 2.5 g of ispaghul, and the glass of water followed by the half-glass more than covers this requirement. Drinking water regularly throughout the day is recommended alongside taking the product.

Can Sollievo Soft cause gas or bloating?

When you first start using it, the isphagul fiber may cause flatulence or a feeling of a bloated stomach while your intestines adjust to this increase in fiber. These discomforts generally disappear with continued use and are more pronounced when the product is taken with too little liquid. Since the recommended dosage is 1 to 2 packets per day, starting with a single packet allows you to gradually increase the amount.
