It is based on the Proflex complex, which combines provitamin B5, silk amino acids, and essential keratin components, and delivers these moisturizing and restructuring active ingredients deep into the nail plate.
Applied before nail polish, it protects your nails while preserving their flexibility. That’s the whole point of an anti-drying base coat on a dry nail: a flexible nail bends; a dry nail breaks. On fragile or weakened nails, maintaining this flexibility helps prevent dryness, splitting, and breakage at the free edge.
Hydra-Base forms a protective barrier between the nail and the polish. This barrier limits yellowing of the nail caused by contact with colored pigments and acts as an adhesive for the polish, helping your manicure last longer. A base coat therefore serves two purposes at once, which sets it apart from other treatments designed to protect weakened nails.
There are three situations where it is particularly useful: frequent manicures, where nail polish and nail polish remover are applied repeatedly without giving the nail time to rehydrate; hands that are frequently exposed to water and household cleaning products; and soft nails that bend rather than resist. It can also be worn under clear nail polish when you don’t feel like wearing color but want to keep your nails protected.
This base coat should never be worn alone: it needs to be sealed. For this, we recommend the Mavala Gel Finish Top Coat, which is applied directly on top. It seals the base coat, provides a glossy finish, and absorbs daily wear and tear instead of the layers underneath.
Instructions
On nails that are completely free of any traces of polish and oil, apply a thin layer of Hydra-Base. Allow to dry completely, then apply two thin layers of polish or, if unavailable, a top coat.

The recurring question about water-based base coats always revolves around nail preparation. This is what determines how well the polish holds: a nail that’s still oily—whether because hand cream was just applied or because nail polish remover left a film—prevents the base coat from adhering, and the manicure will peel off in three days. A quick swipe of nail polish remover on each nail—even if there’s no polish to remove—solves the problem. The coat should be thin, and the base must be completely dry: a water-based top coat dries more slowly than a solvent-based one, and applying polish too soon causes bubbles.
A word on what a base coat can and cannot do. It’s a cosmetic product: it works on the appearance and flexibility of the nail while it’s being worn, and the nail then grows back with its own natural characteristics. For nails that split, the benefits are seen over several weeks—the time it takes for the nail to grow out—and it’s better to use it as part of a long-term reduction in nail polish remover use rather than for daily touch-ups. However, if a nail changes in thickness or color, lifts from its nail bed, or becomes painful, this goes beyond the scope of a manicure: you should see a doctor, and the polish should be removed before the appointment.
Can I wear Mavala Hydra-Base on its own, without nail polish on top?
No. This base coat is designed to be covered: it’s sealed with two thin layers of nail polish or, when color isn’t desired, with a top coat alone. When worn on its own, it doesn’t fulfill its protective role and wears off very quickly.
Can I replace my Mavala Barrier Base with Mavala Hydra-Base?
Yes: it’s the same product, but the name has changed and the formula has been updated. It still serves as a protective base coat for dry or delicate nails, and the application process is the same.
Can I apply Mavala Hydra-Base to gel or resin nails?
This base coat is designed for natural nails, on which it forms a flexible film. On gel or resin nails, it does not benefit the artificial structure and interferes with the adhesion of the system’s products.
Can I use Mavala Hydra-Base every day?
Daily use is not a problem as long as the nail tolerates it well. The process that stresses the nail is not the application but the removal: it’s better to space out the use of nail polish remover than to apply multiple successive layers. The only time limit is related to the bottle itself, which has a shelf life of 12 months after opening.
