Rule No. 1 is to choose a self-tanner suited to your skin tone.
To do this, check the DHA content in the product. This natural active ingredient—which the more scientifically minded among us might grandly refer to as dihydroxyacetone—reacts with the skin’s amino acids to darken your complexion.
The higher the DHA content in a self-tanner, the darker the tan.
Products generally contain 1 to 8% DHA. Those with fair skin should therefore opt for self-tanners containing between 1 and 3% DHA, and preferably gradual self-tanners to control the tan.
For darker skin tones, a 5% concentration is ideal. Products with the highest concentrations are recommended when you’re already tanned and want to deepen your tan. But definitely not in the winter!
