When should you use this mousse to achieve a tanned complexion?
Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self-Tanning Mousse is a lightweight mousse that combines two self-tanning active ingredients: dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose. These two sugars react with proteins in the outer layers of the skin to create a golden tint. Guide pigments color the mousse upon application: they highlight the areas already covered as you spread the product.
Its express formula delivers a sun-kissed glow in just one hour, allowing you to apply it at the end of the day and rinse it off before going to sleep. It provides a natural, long-lasting tan, the intensity of which is determined by how thoroughly you rinse it off rather than by the number of layers applied.
Its lightweight texture glides effortlessly over large areas of the body. The mousse works while moisturizing the skin with every application, leaving it radiant: the glycerin it contains helps retain water in the outer layers of the epidermis.
It’s perfect before a night out, a wedding, or a vacation, as well as on the first sunny days of spring, when legs and arms are finally revealed after winter. You can customize your tan, choosing how long to leave it on based on the desired intensity: shorter for a subtle hint of color, longer for a more lasting result.
An even tan depends primarily on the skin it’s applied to: dead skin cells accumulated on the elbows, knees, and ankles bind more DHA, causing these areas to darken faster than the rest of the body. For this reason, we recommend the Avril organic body scrub, to be used in the shower before application: it gently removes these surface cells, so that the foam then settles on smooth skin and tans more evenly. When applying the product, the applicator glove from the same brand also keeps your palms free of the tanning product.
How do you apply the Express 1-Hour Self-Tanning Mousse?
Instructions for Use
On clean, exfoliated skin free of moisturizer, press firmly on the applicator, apply a generous amount of foam to the Bondi Sands applicator glove, then apply it using large circular motions on your legs, arms, and body; use the remaining product on the glove for your face, elbows, and knees. Rinse the skin after 30 minutes for a light to medium tan, 1 hour for a dark tan, or 2 to 3 hours for a deeper tan under a warm shower, then pat dry gently without rubbing.

Our Expert Tips on Bondi Sands Express Self-Tanning Mousse
Before using your first bottle, the most important point is listed at the top of the precautions. The color from DHA does not result in any melanin production: it does not prepare your skin for the sun. We’re often told at the counter that a “base” tan would allow you to stay in the sun longer during the summer; this is false—skin tanned by a self-tanner requires the same protection as skin that has remained fair. As for the test on the forearm, it should be repeated every time you switch products, even if you’ve tolerated another mousse well.
The tan fades at the same rate as the skin’s natural renewal cycle. To ensure it fades evenly rather than in patches, moisturize your body daily in the days that follow—without exfoliating—and avoid very hot baths and vigorous rubbing. Apply a new layer to freshly exfoliated skin once the old tan has almost faded: applying a new layer over an uneven tan will accentuate the lines where the colors meet.
FAQ
How long should I leave Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self-Tanning Mousse on the first time?
A short application time is safest for your first try. The shade you see while the product is on does not reflect the final result. A short initial application allows you to assess the color on your own skin, then extend the application time for subsequent uses.
Does the color of Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self-Tanning Mousse continue to deepen after showering?
Yes. DHA and erythrulose continue to react with the skin for 6 to 8 hours after rinsing, which only removes the guide pigments. The color the next morning is therefore deeper than what you see right after showering.
Does Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self-Tanning Mousse have a scent?
The formula contains no added fragrance. Some people may notice a slight odor in the hours following application, caused by the reaction between DHA and the skin; others may not notice any smell at all.
Does Bondi Sands 1-Hour Express Self-Tanning Mousse stain sheets and clothing?
While it’s still on the skin, the mousse contains guide pigments that can stain fabrics upon contact. Wearing loose-fitting, dark-colored clothing minimizes this risk until you rinse it off. After showering, user feedback varies depending on the amount applied: some notice no transfer at all, while others see a few stains on their sheets.
