Our advice and opinions from natural health experts
Why do I have dry hands?
Your hands are irritated and can no longer maintain an optimal level of hydration.
This is linked, most of the time, to small repeated attacks: contact with water, soap, cleaning products, etc. Simply washing your hands as often as recommended (each time you go to the bathroom or blow your nose, before cooking or eating, etc.) is enough to make your hands dry.
Often, you don't realize it until winter because the cold, wet weather is just one more attack, which can make the problem more visible or more painful.
Once winter is over, hands cry for help. Parched by the cold, they become rough, itchy, and can even become covered with wounds if not taken care of.
For people who suffer from chapped hands occasionally or chronically, the following measures can prevent the problem from getting worse (by combining it with prescribed medical treatment, if applicable):
- Avoid prolonged exposure to external elements: cold, sun, wind (wear gloves or mittens from the start of autumn.)
- Wash hands with warm or cold water rather than hot.
- Prefer a soap-free cleanser or a mild, hydrating soap .
- Apply a moisturizer after each wash and when the hands begin to dry. Certain natural products also work miracles: cocoa butter, lanolin or shea butter.
- Avoid using antibacterial soaps (or gels), which are aggressive to the skin.
- Wear gloves for normal household chores.
