Chondroitin is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan related to hyaluronic acid, which is used in the production of proteoglycans (combination of a protein and carbohydrates). Chondroitin sulfate is a component of the cartilage matrix; it contributes to the hydration of the cartilage, and therefore to its flexibility and its elasticity

For its part, glucosamine sulphate is an amino sugar that is used for the synthesis of several macromolecules present in various tissues, including cartilage.

The chondroitin-glucosamine combination

Healthy chondrocytes normally synthesize chondroitin and glucosamine from glucose in foods after several biochemical reactions. In case of osteoarthritis, chondrocytes even well fed glucose can no longer perform their task properly. In addition, the production of these two substances by the body gradually decreases with age. The glucosamine-chondroitin combination is relevant since the mechanisms of action of these two molecules are different and complementary.

It is estimated that taking these two products improves the condition of osteoarthritis in approximately 80% of cases. There are commercially available preparations combining these two molecules, but their dosage is often insufficient.
