What is torticollis, and what causes it?

Torticollis is a painful spasm of the neck muscles—primarily the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles—that forces the head into a pain-relieving position. The vast majority of cases of torticollis are benign and resolve within a few days. Our muscle comfort line offers active ingredients to relieve neck muscle spasms.

  • Whiplash-related torticollis: a reflex contraction following a sudden movement or maintaining acertain position—common upon waking after sleeping in an awkward position
  • Torticollis caused by a draft: cold causes local vasoconstriction and a protective spasm of the exposed cervical muscles
  • Stiff neck associated with cervical osteoarthritis: osteophytes and disc stiffness make the cervical spine more vulnerable to sudden movements—see our page on cervical osteoarthritis
  • Stress-induced torticollis: psychological tension manifests as chronic trapezius and cervical muscle spasms
  • Symptomatic torticollis: rarer but important to recognize—pain associated with fever, severe headaches, dizziness, or numbness in the arms → seek urgent medical attention

How can you quickly relieve torticollis?

Several immediate approaches reduce pain and muscle spasms within the first few hours—the same principles apply as for any muscle spasm, with specific attention to the neck.

  • Local heat: a heating pad or hot water bottle on the back of the neck for 15–20 minutes—improves local blood flow and relaxes the contracted muscle fibers—particularly effective for torticollis caused by cold or sleeping position
  • Gentle massage of the trapezius muscles: slow, deep kneading of the tight muscles—activate the trigger points beneath the skull and at the base of the neck
  • Gentle neck stretches: gradual lateral tilt (ear toward the shoulder), gentle rotation—never force a rotation that causes pain—3 sets of 30 seconds in each direction
  • Essential oils: peppermint (cooling analgesic effect) or true lavender (muscle relaxant) diluted in a vegetable oil—apply using circular massage motions to the nape of the neck and the trapezius muscles
  • Topical pain-relief gels (topical NSAIDs): apply directly to the tight area—effectiveness comparable to oral NSAIDs for superficial musculoskeletal pain

What natural supplements are recommended for recurrent neck muscle spasms?

For people prone to repeated stiff necks, long-term supplementation reduces chronic muscle tension and improves the resilience of the cervical muscles.

  • Magnesium: the gold standard for treating muscle spasms—reduces neuromuscular hyperexcitability—300–400 mg/day of bisglycinate or malate—enhanced effectiveness if a deficiency is confirmed
  • Omega-3 (EPA/DHA): reduces muscle inflammation underlying chronic spasms — provides complementary benefits to magnesium in recurrent cases
  • Turmeric (curcumin): natural anti-inflammatory — helpful for torticollis associated with inflammatory cervical osteoarthritis — bioavailable formula
  • B vitamins (B1, B6, B12): support the peripheral nervous system — helpful if there is a neuropathic component (tingling in the arms)
  • Hydration: Cervical discs are 80% water—chronic dehydration weakens them and increases the risk of compensatory muscle spasms

Prevention, Ergonomics, and Warning Signs of Torticollis

  • Ergonomic pillow: height adapted to sleeping position (side: thick pillow; back: thin pillow)—maintains cervical lordosis while resting—see our ergonomics page
  • Workstation: monitor at eye level, keyboard that prevents shoulder tension, active break every 45 minutes with gentle cervical rotations
  • Infant torticollis: persistent tilting of the head in newborns — may result from a specific in utero position or a difficult delivery — early physical therapy intervention is essential to prevent cranial asymmetries
  • Warning signs requiring urgent medical attention: fever + torticollis (rule out meningitis), recent neck trauma + torticollis (fracture), torticollis + tingling/weakness in the arms (nerve root compression), persistent torticollis lasting > 1 week with no improvement
  • Cervical physical therapy: recommended for recurrent torticollis—strengthening of the deep flexor muscles of the neck—a program of 6–8 sessions
