What is panthenol, and how is it different from dexpanthenol?

Panthenol (provitamin B5 — INCI: Panthenol) is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), widely used in cosmetics for its moisturizing, reparative, soothing, and film-forming properties. In cosmetics, the term “panthenol” generally refers to the DL racemic mixture (50% active D-pantothenol + 50% inactive L-pantothenol), while dexpanthenol corresponds to the pure, biologically active D form (see our dexpanthenol page for medical applications). Discover our facial serums, nourishing moisturizers, and treatments for skin imperfections.

  • Mechanism of action in cosmetics: D-panthenol (active ingredient) penetrates the epidermis → conversion to pantothenic acid → incorporation into coenzyme A (CoA)—CoA activates the synthesis of ceramides and membrane lipids → strengthening of the skin barrier—panthenol itself (the unconverted alcohol form) acts as a direct humectant: it attracts and retains water molecules in the superficial layers of the epidermis (stratum corneum)
  • Film-forming and emollient properties: forms a thin, hydrophilic film on the skin and hair surface — reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) without complete occlusion (does not create an impermeable film like petroleum jelly) — “second skin” effect that smooths the surface of the skin and the hair cuticle — non-comedogenic (does not clog pores) → suitable for oily and acne-prone skin
  • Regenerative and healing action: stimulation of dermal fibroblasts (collagen synthesis) + keratinocyte proliferation (epidermal renewal) — a well-documented mechanism in dermatology (see studies on Bepanthen) — in cosmetic formulations at concentrations of 1–5%: accelerated skin renewal + reduced signs of fatigue + improved skin texture
  • Topical anti-inflammatory: inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators in the epidermis — reduces redness, swelling, and a burning sensation — useful for post-dermatological treatments (after laser, chemical peels, microdermabrasion) and after sun exposure
  • Compatibility and tolerance: one of the least irritating ingredients in cosmetics — hypoallergenic — non-comedogenic — suitable from birth (diaper rash) — safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding — standard cosmetic concentrations: 0.5–5% (skin care) and 0.5–3% (hair care)

Panthenol for the skin: applications based on skin needs

  • Dry and dehydrated skin: humectant + emollient + regenerating — maintains the epidermis’s (stratum corneum) moisture content — improves suppleness, texture, and comfort — ideal in body/face moisturizers, body lotions, lip balms, hand creams — discover our moisturizing and nourishing formulas
  • Sensitive, irritated, and reactive skin: anti-inflammatory + soothing + film-forming — calms redness, itching, and tightness — relieves atopic skin (eczema — ceramide deficiency) — post-waxing (soothes irritated follicles) — aftershave (calms micro-irritations + moisturizes) — after sun exposure (soothes sunburn + restores the skin barrier)
  • Acne-prone and blemish-prone skin: non-comedogenic → does not clog pores — soothes redness around blemishes — hydrates skin weakened by drying anti-acne treatments (benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, acids) — repairs post-acne micro-lesions — use in combination with niacinamide → check out our blemish care products
  • Post-dermatological treatments: laser, chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion → temporarily compromised skin with an impaired barrier — panthenol is the ultimate post-treatment skincare ingredient — reduces erythema + accelerates re-epithelialization + minimizes the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Tattoos and healing scars: after the initial 48 hours (inflammatory phase) — hydration + soothing + accelerated epidermal regeneration — reduces itching associated with healing — panthenol creams are recommended by many tattoo artists for post-tattoo care — avoid using on fresh, open skin (first 24–48 hours)

Panthenol for Hair and the Scalp

  • Hair mechanisms: panthenol penetrates the hair cortex (especially in porous or damaged hair) — integrates into keratin proteins → swelling of the hair shaft (diameter +10%) → hair appears fuller and smoother — forms a hydrophilic film on the cuticle → smooths raised cuticle scales → increased shine + reduced frizz
  • Hair and Scalp Hydration: hair humectant — reduces water loss from the hair fiber — relieves dry scalp, itching, and dry dandruff (by restoring the scalp’s stratum corneum hydration) — found in shampoos, conditioners, hair masks, and serums
  • Thermal and breakage protection: the panthenol film reduces mechanical damage (friction, styling) and thermal damage (heat from hair dryers, flat irons) — prevents breakage by strengthening the cohesion of the hair fiber — repairs damaged ends — effective concentrations in hair care: 0.5–3%
  • Hair compatibility: all hair types — particularly beneficial for dry, damaged, colored, bleached, and curly hair (chronic hydration issues) — silicone-free → suitable for “no-poo” or “low-poo” routines — can be added directly to shampoo, a hair mask, or hair oil
  • Hair synergies: panthenol + hyaluronic acid (dual humectant, intense hydration) — panthenol + hydrolyzed keratin (structural repair + coating) — panthenol + plant oils (complementary nourishment + hydration) — panthenol + aloe vera (soothing + moisturizing scalp care)

How to Choose and Use Panthenol: Concentrations and Formulations

  • Concentrations and expected effects: skincare — 0.1–1% (light hydration, found in multi-active formulas) — 1–5% (clinically significant moisturizing + repairing effect) — > 5% (specific healing formulas — similar to medical-grade dexpanthenol) — hair care — 0.5–3% (coats + moisturizes + adds shine) — shampoo: 0.5–1% — conditioner + hair mask: 1–3%
  • Available cosmetic forms: skin serums (light, water-based texture—absorbs quickly)—creams and balms (richer texture for dry skin or dry areas) — body or hair sprays and mists — moisturizing body lotions — after-sun products — healing ointments — shampoos + conditioners — hair masks — styling sprays and hair serums
  • Pure liquid panthenol: available at DIY cosmetics stores — 75% aqueous solution (glycerol viscosity) — can be incorporated into homemade formulations (shampoo, cream, conditioner) — dosage: 0.5–5% in the final formula
  • Quality criteria: labeled as DL-panthenol or D-pantothenol (prefer D-pantothenol or dexpanthenol for the pure active form) — Free of denatured alcohol and fragrance for sensitive skin — Stable formulations (pH 4–7 for panthenol) — COSMOS, Ecocert certifications, or dermatologically tested formulations for reactive skin
  • See our Vitamin B5 page for the nutritional role of pantothenic acid and our dexpanthenol page for dermatological applications (medical wound healing, burns, diaper rash)
