Pharmacological properties of EPS Phytostandard Walnut

Tonic property, astringent (1)

Walnut leaves, thanks to their tannins, are used orally or locally in manifestations of venous insufficiency such as hemorrhoids. This vitamin P property increases capillary resistance and venous tone, decreases capillary permeability and stabilizes collagen.

Antioxidant property

In vitro, an extract of walnut leaf exhibits antioxidant activity (ability to scavenge diphenylpicrylhydrazyl or DPPH radicals) greater than butylhydroxyanisol (BHA) and α-tocopherol.

Anti-infectious property

* Antibacterial. In vitro, walnut leaf inhibits the growth of certain Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus which can cause food poisoning.
* Antifungal. In vitro, the walnut leaf inhibits the growth of two fungi responsible for mycoses of the skin and integuments, Microsporum canis and Trichophyton violaceum.

Antidiarrhoeal property

This property results from the tannins of walnut leaves, in particular from:
- their affinity for protein molecules, in this case digestive enzymes,
- their astringent property, which tightens the digestive mucosa.
- their antiseptic effect.
Walnut leaves are thus traditionally used in the symptomatic treatment of diarrhea, in particular infectious diarrhea.
