What is acute bronchitis, and what causes it?

Acute bronchitis is a temporary inflammation of the lining of the bronchi—the airways leading to the lungs—most often triggered by a viral infection. It differs from chronic bronchitis (COPD) in that it is temporary: most episodes last 1 to 3 weeks, although the cough may persist for several additional weeks.
