Regurgitation (the spitting up of milk) is very common in infants; nearly two-thirds of children aged 4 to 5 months experience it. This is a sign of gastroesophageal reflux (GER), an involuntary backflow of stomach contents into the baby’s esophagus. Spontaneous regurgitation occurs without effort, often during a burp or after a feeding. It is exacerbated by the baby’s liquid diet, as well as by changes in position and pressure on the abdomen. GERD should not be confused with vomiting; unlike vomiting, GERD is not accompanied by muscle or abdominal contractions.
