Strepsils: A Complete Line for the Local Treatment of Sore Throats and Mild Oral Conditions

The Strepsils line consists of therapeutic products designed for the symptomatic relief of mild sore throats without associated fever, and for the local treatment of superficial oral conditions such as canker sores or minor mucosal lesions. It is primarily based on a lozenge formulation that provides local, gradual relief, as well as a liquid mouthwash intended for direct application to the inflamed area.

Distributed by the Reckitt Benckiser Group, the Strepsils brand benefits from the pharmaceutical expertise acquired since the integration of Boots Healthcare in 2006. Today, Strepsils is one of the leading brands in the over-the-counter sore throat medication segment.

Indications: sore throat, throat irritation, canker sores

Strepsils products are indicated for the local treatment of mild throat conditions, whether caused by infection (viral pharyngitis), inflammation (mucosal irritation), environmental factors (pollutants, dry air), or mechanical factors (vocal strain, repeated coughing). Certain formulations are also effective against canker sores and minor oral wounds that are not secondarily infected.

Targeted symptoms include:

  • Tingling, burning, or discomfort when swallowing;
  • Localized redness and inflammation of the throat;
  • Mild to moderate sore throat, without fever;
  • Itching or dryness in the throat;
  • Recurrent canker sores or microlesions in the oral cavity.

Active Ingredients: A Proven Antiseptic Combination

Strepsils lozenges contain a combination of two local antiseptics:

  • Amylmetacresol (0.6 mg)
  • 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol (1.2 mg)

These substances provide broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against common pathogens of the oropharyngeal tract. Their combined action aims to limit local bacterial growth, thereby reducing inflammation and irritation.

The lozenge formulation allows for sustained release of the active ingredients, optimizing their contact with the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

Strepsils Lidocaine: antiseptic + anesthetic for more severe pain

For patients experiencing moderate to severe throat pain, particularly when swallowing is significantly difficult, the product line offers enhanced formulations containing lidocaine.

  • Strepsils Lidocaine lozenges combine the two classic antiseptics with 2 mg of lidocaine, a fast-acting local anesthetic.
  • StrepsilSpray Lidocaine is a mouth spray intended for the localized treatment of sore throats, canker sores, and minor lesions.

These formulations are intended for adults and children over 12 years of age, due to the risk of choking associated with local anesthesia of the throat. Their use is contraindicated around mealtimes.

Various flavors, sugar-free versions, and available for children as young as 6 years old

To ensure better compliance, the product line offers several flavors:

  • Honey-Lemon, known for its natural soothing properties;
  • Icy Mint, for an immediate cooling effect;
  • Orange-Vitamin C, for additional antioxidant benefits;
  • Sugar-Free Strawberry and Sugar-Free Lemon, particularly suitable for low-carb diets.

Classic Strepsils lozenges may be given to children ages 6 and up, under adult supervision. Each lozenge should be sucked slowly, without chewing, to ensure prolonged contact with the oral and pharyngeal mucous membranes and to optimize therapeutic effectiveness.

Precautions and Contraindications

For antiseptic lozenges:

  • Do not exceed the recommended dosage (1 lozenge every 2 to 3 hours, not to exceed 8 lozenges per day).
  • Do not use in children under 6 years of age.
  • Use caution in patients with a history of allergy to any of the excipients or active ingredients.

For formulations containing lidocaine:

  • Contraindicated in children under 12 years of age.
  • Use with caution in patients with swallowing difficulties or a history of aspiration.
  • Contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women without medical advice.
  • Risk of a positive doping test in athletes.

An affordable and effective line of products for common sore throats

Strepsils has established itself as a leading therapeutic solution for the symptomatic treatment of uncomplicated sore throats. Thanks to a dual-action antiseptic formulation, various formats (lozenges and spray), multiple flavors, and suitability for children as young as 6 years old, the brand covers a wide range of needs.

The lidocaine-enriched versions also help relieve more intense pain, canker sores, and minor oral lesions. The entire product line is designed for localized treatment; it is practical and well-tolerated for self-medication, provided that the precautions for use and indications are followed.
