When should you use the Drink Detective coaster?

Drink Detective is a paper beverage test in the form of a 10 cm by 10 cm coaster. Its two test areas contain reagents designed to react to the presence of GHB and ketamine, similar to the tests found in screening and diagnostic kits.

GHB and ketamine are among the substances that can be added to a drink without the person’s knowledge, with the intent to commit theft or assault. Colorless and odorless, they go unnoticed in a glass. To perform the test, place a drop of the beverage on each test area.

Placed on the table like an ordinary coaster, Drink Detective fits in a pocket or wallet and can be used discreetly, without any equipment or devices.

It’s perfect for outings where you’re drinking away from home: bars, restaurants, festivals, and events. Each coaster features two test zones.

We’re also preparing for a night out with safe sex in mind. For this, we recommend Durex Jeans condoms, which come in a small pack of three that’s easy to carry.

How do you use this GHB and ketamine detection test?

Instructions for Use

Place a drop of the drink on each of the two test areas, then rub gently until the surface is dry. If either area turns dark blue, do not consume the drink and follow the instructions printed on the back of the coaster.

Precautions

  • Read the instructions printed on the back of the coaster before first use, especially regarding beverages that cannot be tested.
  • Drink Detective tests only for GHB and ketamine. It does not detect sedatives, alcohol, or other drugs: a zone that does not change color does not guarantee that the drink is safe.
  • If you or a loved one experiences dizziness, confusion, or unusual drowsiness after drinking, call 15 (Samu) or 112 immediately. These numbers are toll-free.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

Our expert advice on the Drink Detective test

Interpret a Drink Detective result as a potential warning, never as a green light. A dark blue zone is reason enough to set the glass aside; a zone that doesn’t change says nothing about sedative medications, which are most commonly found in cases of chemical submission reported in France.

The safest protection doesn’t come from a test: have your drink served right in front of you, keep it in your hand, and then share it with others. And if someone in the group feels unwell for no apparent reason, don’t waste time testing their drink—stay with that person and call emergency services.

FAQ

Is the Drink Detective test reliable?

A study published in 2023 in the journal *Forensic Science International* evaluated this coaster. It produced no false positives for drinks without drugs, but it detected GHB in 31 to 69% of the drinks that contained it; it detected no ketamine at the doses tested. The authors consider it insufficient to rule out the presence of a drug.

Can I test any drink with Drink Detective?

No. The manufacturer excludes certain beverages, which are listed on the back of the coaster. In general, when testing beverages, milky, creamy, or very colorful drinks yield less reliable results. The result is easier to read with a clear beverage.

What should I do if a section of the Drink Detective turns dark blue?

Do not drink it and keep the glass. Notify the venue’s staff or security, stay with your friends, and do not go home alone. Contact law enforcement by dialing 17. It’s helpful to note the time, location, and people present.

I’m unsure about what happened after a night out: what should I do, even if I didn’t use Drink Detective?

As soon as possible, see a doctor or go to the emergency room: blood and urine samples can detect a substance up to about five days after the incident. CRAFS, a reference center for substance-facilitated assaults, offers free counseling at 01 40 05 42 70. A complaint can be filed at any police station or gendarmerie.
