Health education tips:

a) What is androgenetic alopecia?

Normally the hair has a lifespan of 3 to 6 years and 50 to 100 hairs fall per day.

More significant hair loss can occur seasonally (in the fall) or after childbirth: this loss is normal, transient and there is no need to start treatment.

Alopecia is defined as hair loss greater than 100 hairs per day.

There are two types of alopecia:

· acute alopecia,

· chronic alopecia.

Acute alopecia (sudden hair loss over a short period) can be diffuse or in patches (alopecia areata) and are most often of known cause (aggressive hair care, poor general condition, poorly balanced weight loss, certain medications, shock psychic, stress…).

These acute alopecia should not be treated with this medicine.

Chronic (long-term) alopecia is almost always diffuse.

They are sometimes due to a specific disease (thyroid, metabolic, etc.) and they should not be treated with this medication.

In the great majority, these chronic alopecias are of poorly understood origin, most often of a hereditary nature: it is androgenetic alopecia. Only this type of alopecia can be treated with minoxidil.

b) How to recognize androgenetic alopecia in males?

http://afssaps-prd.afssaps.fr/php/ecodex/images/N0206190/image007.jpg

Androgenetic alopecia begins with a baldness of the temporal gulfs.

Then a slight tonsure appears at the top of the head.

These two areas devoid of hair will gradually enlarge: androgenetic alopecia progressively evolves into baldness.

c) Some tips for use

· Use a mild shampoo (preferably without silicone).

If you shampoo after applying minoxidil, respect a period of 4 hours after this one.

If you are applying minoxidil after shampooing, it is recommended to do so on a dry scalp.

You can use a hair dryer preferably in a warm position after applying minoxidil.

· You can use styling mousse, gels or sprays with a minimum delay of 1 hour between applications.

· There is no interaction between your treatment with minoxidil and your perms or coloring treatments, but it is preferable to limit them because of their aggressiveness on the hair.

· If you plan to be in the sun after applying minoxidil, it is recommended that you cover your hair.

d) Some additional information

· At the start of treatment, over a short period of time, an increase in hair loss may occur. This hair was meant to fall out and does it faster. This is a normal phenomenon, continue the treatment.

· The first hair that grows will be soft, fluffy and not very visible. As you continue with your treatment, they may change and thicken.

GLOSSARY (summary)

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort appearing after contact with a particular substance, use of a medicine or ingestion of food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive problems.

alopecia
General or partial loss of hair or hair.

hepatitis
Inflammation of the liver. It can be due to a drug, virus, alcohol, or some other cause.
Viral hepatitis usually gets better without treatment. Unlike hepatitis A and E, which is almost always benign, hepatitis B and C can become chronic: the virus persists in the patient's body, who remains contagious but does not necessarily suffer from liver problems. Chronic hepatitis is said to be active when the virus continues to destroy liver cells, destruction resulting in increased transaminases in the blood.

arterial hypertension
Excessive pressure (tension) of blood in the arteries. This pressure is provided by the heart and is expressed by two digits. It is maximum during the contraction of the heart, or systole (first number), and minimum during cardiac rest, or diastole (second number). High blood pressure is characterized by a maximum (systolic) pressure greater than or equal to 16, or a minimum pressure (diastolic) greater than or equal to 9.5. Treatment is initiated when these figures are exceeded or for lower blood pressure in certain people with cardiovascular risk factors: heredity, smoking, diabetes, excess cholesterol. Permanent antihypertensive treatment helps limit damage to the heart and blood vessels caused by high blood pressure.

mucous membranes
Tissue (membrane) that lines the cavities and ducts of the body communicating with the outside (digestive tract, respiratory system, urinary tract, etc.).

neuritis
Damage to a nerve which may be due to diseases or to various causes: diabetes, alcoholism, intoxication, drugs. When several nerves are affected, the term polyneuritis is used. Some medicines can damage the optic nerve (optic neuritis) and cause vision problems.

edema
Accumulation of water or lymph causing localized swelling.

vasodilator
Drug capable of dilating blood vessels (artery, vein), as opposed to vasoconstrictor.

dizziness
Symptom which can indicate a feeling of loss of balance (common sense) or, more strictly, a sensation of rotation on oneself or the environment (medical sense).

way
  • Path (route of administration) used to administer the drugs: oral, sublingual, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intradermal, transdermal.
  • Set of hollow organs allowing the passage of air (respiratory tract), food (digestive tract), urine (urinary tract), bile (bile duct), etc.

How to prevent hair loss? How to prevent hair loss?

Hair loss is a concern for both women and men. The brush full of hair can be maddening, but it doesn't always have to be. The lifespan of a hair varies from 3 to 7 years. The hair is constantly in renewal: the hair grows, lives, then dies and ends up falling out. A hair is considered to be dead…
