Digestive Function
The digestive system is particularly rich in nerve fibers, which is why it is often referred to as the “second brain.” In fact, the entire digestive system is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, which operates completely outside of conscious control. This system consists of two types of nerve fibers: sympathetic fibers, which reduce digestive system activity, and parasympathetic fibers, which have the opposite effect. They act simultaneously, with one type sometimes taking precedence over the other. For example, parasympathetic nerve fibers stimulate stomach acid production, while sympathetic fibers inhibit it. All it takes is for the former, for various reasons, to become more active than the latter for a person to experience heartburn, a common digestive disorder, especially among stressed individuals.
