What is sunscreen and how does it work?

Sunscreen is a skin care product designed to protect the epidermis from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) rays emitted by the sun. It contains filters and screens that absorb or reflect UVA and UVB rays, minimizing the risk of sunburn and long-term damage such as premature skin aging or the development of skin cancers.

How to choose the right sun cream?

Choosing the right sun cream involves considering several factors:

  1. Sun Protection Factor (SPF): A high SPF indicates superior protection. For daily exposure, an SPF of 30 is recommended, while for prolonged outdoor activities, an SPF of 50 or more is preferable.
  2. Spectrum of protection: Opt for creams offering broad-spectrum protection, covering both UVA and UVB rays.
  3. Skin type: Formulations vary for oily, dry, sensitive or acne-prone skin. Choose a product adapted to your skin type to avoid irritation and discomfort.
  4. Water resistance: If you plan to swim or sweat, select a water-resistant cream.

How much sun cream should I apply, and how often?

To be effective, sunscreen must be applied generously. The general rule is to use around 30 ml (equivalent to two tablespoons) of cream to cover an adult's body. Application should be repeated every two hours, and always after swimming, perspiring or using a towel.

Can sunscreen be used on children?

Yes, it's essential to protect children's skin with sunscreen. However, choose products specially formulated for children, which contain mineral rather than chemical filters, as they are less likely to cause allergic reactions and are gentler on young children's sensitive skin.

Does sunscreen have an expiry date?

Sunscreen loses its effectiveness over time. Check the expiry date on the packaging and replace any expired product. In general, sunscreen has a shelf life of three years from the date of manufacture, but this may vary depending on storage conditions.

How does sunscreen benefit skin health in the long term?

Regular use of sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, particularly melanoma, by blocking harmful UV rays. It also helps prevent premature skin aging, such as wrinkles and age spots, by protecting against sun damage.

How does sunscreen protect against UVA and UVB rays?

UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and are primarily responsible for skin aging and wrinkles, while UVB rays cause sunburn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer. Sun creams contain chemical and physical filters that act by absorbing, scattering or reflecting the rays, thus preventing skin damage. Broad-spectrum products are specially formulated to provide protection against both types of radiation.

Can daily use of sunscreen prevent age spots?

Yes, daily application of sunscreen can significantly reduce the appearance of age spots, which are caused by repeated exposure to the sun. By protecting your skin from UV exposure, you minimize the cumulative skin damage that leads to aging and pigmentation.

Are organic sunscreens more effective or safer?

Organic sun creams are formulated with mineral sunscreens, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are considered safer for people with sensitive skin and for the environment. Although generally more expensive, these products are effective and avoid chemical components that can cause irritation or allergic reactions.

How do I apply sunscreen correctly to my face?

To apply sunscreen correctly to the face, follow these steps:

  1. Cleanse your face to remove impurities and product residues.
  2. Apply a generous layer of sun cream, covering all exposed areas, including forehead, cheeks, nose, chin and even ears.
  3. Allow the cream to penetrate and form a protective film for about 15 to 20 minutes before going out in the sun.
  4. Remember to reapply every two hours or after perspiring or swimming to maintain optimum protection.

What's the difference between children's and adult sunscreens?

The main difference between sunscreens for children and those for adults lies in the formulation. Children's products are generally formulated with physical rather than chemical filters to minimize the risk of irritation and allergies. In addition, they are often more water-resistant to offer long-lasting protection despite physical activity and frequent contact with water. They may also contain soothing and moisturizing ingredients to care for the delicate skin of young users.
