Although a horse’s genetic potential is determined in advance, nutrition, management, and the care provided to foals play significant roles in their development and in helping them reach their full potential. Growth is defined by an increase in live weight with age and changes in body measurements over time. This is referred to as “ADG” in kg/day (Average Daily Gain in kilograms per day). Development refers to the establishment and the overall set of morphological and chemical transformations in the various tissues and regions of the body that enable it to gradually attain the characteristics of adulthood.

A foal’s nutrition begins in its mother’s uterus and changes considerably throughout its growth. For this reason, it is essential to properly adjust the breeding mare’s diet during gestation and to adapt the foal’s feeding program throughout its growth.

The mother’s diet is important during the second half of gestation. A deficiency in high-quality protein leads to reduced brain development, lower birth weight, and insufficient hormonal and enzymatic capacity. However, overfeeding must be avoided. How should this supplement be used for foals?

Administer directly into the foal’s mouth.

Recommended doses:

• Foal (basic intake before weaning): 20 ml per day.
• Foal with growth disorders: 20 to 40 ml per day, starting at the 12th week.
• Pregnant mare in late gestation: 20 to 40 ml per day, starting when the udder begins to swell.
• Small horses and ponies: adjust the dosage according to the animal’s weight.
