When should you use these heating patches on your muscles?

Granions Muscle Relaxing Patches are a medical device for thermotherapy: adhesive patches that generate their own heat and are applied directly to the skin. They are designed to relieve muscle pain through gentle, diffused heat.

The patch works without any external power source: no electrical outlet, no heating in the oven, and no electric kettle. The heat activates automatically once the patch is removed from its wrapper, then gradually spreads to the covered area for the entire duration of use. No preparation is needed in advance: the patch can be carried in a bag or pocket and used wherever you are, whether at home or at work.

Self-adhesive, it stays in place on the affected area and leaves your hands free. This means you can wear it throughout a morning at work or an afternoon at home, without having to lie down with a hot water bottle or hold a compress in place.

Designed for adults, it’s particularly well-suited for muscle discomfort that affects large areas, where a traditional compress might slip or fail to cover the affected area properly. It’s typically applied after unusual physical exertion—such as a day of gardening or moving—or after spending hours in the same position, whether in front of a screen or behind the wheel.

To complement this treatment with dietary supplementation, we recommend Granions Magnesium Bisglycinate 360 mg. Magnesium supports normal muscle function and works from the inside through daily intake, while the patch works from the outside through heat: the two approaches do not overlap.

How do you apply this self-heating patch?

Directions for Use

On clean, dry skin that is free of sweat, remove the patch from its plastic wrapper just before use, peel off the protective film from the adhesive, and apply it immediately to the affected area without applying excessive pressure. Leave it in place for up to 8 hours, then wait 24 hours before reapplying to the same area.

Precautions

  • Medical device. Read the instructions in the package insert and on the label carefully. For external use only.
  • Single-use device.
  • Do not use while sleeping to avoid possible burns. Do not apply prolonged pressure to the area where the patch is applied.
  • Do not use if you are unable to remove the patch on your own (elderly individuals, people with disabilities, children).
  • Do not use on the face; on broken skin (cuts, wounds, eczema, rashes); on skin treated with ointments, creams, or gels; on skin that is sensitive to heat; on an area where the patch has already been applied within the last 24 hours; on an area where another heating device is being used; or on an acute muscle injury.
  • Use with extreme caution on sensitive skin. If an unexpected reaction occurs, remove the patch immediately.
  • Before use, consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have circulatory problems, sensory deficits due to diabetes, or impaired temperature perception.
  • Use of this device by pregnant or breastfeeding women is not recommended.
  • Do not get the patch wet, cut it, or tear it. Do not heat it after use and do not place it in a microwave oven.
  • If accidentally inhaled, seek medical attention. If it comes into contact with the eyes, rinse with water and seek medical attention.
  • Once the patch is no longer warm, dispose of it with household waste. Keep out of reach of children.

Our expert advice on Granions heating patches

The risk associated with a heating patch does not stem from its moderate temperature, but rather from the length of time the skin is exposed to it without properly sensing the heat. That is why the precautions regarding diabetes, circulation, and heat sensitivity should be checked first—whether for yourself or an elderly loved one. If you have any doubts, apply the patch during a time when you’re awake and available to remove it.

A heating patch can provide relief for temporary muscle discomfort following unusual physical exertion or maintaining a certain position for too long. It is not intended for pain that recurs weekly, follows a fall, radiates into an arm or leg, or is accompanied by a fever: these situations require medical attention, not another patch.

FAQ

How does the Granions Muscle Relaxant Patch generate heat?

The patch contains iron powder combined with water, salt, and activated charcoal. As long as it remains in its wrapper, it is protected from the air. When opened, the iron oxidizes upon contact with oxygen, and this reaction releases heat: the patch reaches approximately 40 °C and maintains a constant temperature for the entire intended duration of use. Once the iron powder has fully oxidized, the reaction stops and the patch cools down.

On which areas of the body should Granions Muscle Relaxation Patches be applied?

It is designed for the neck and lower back, and can also be applied to the shoulder and wrist. Its dimensions, 13 x 9.5 cm, cover the nape of the neck, upper shoulders, back, or lower back.

What is the difference between Granions Muscle Relaxing Patches, a warming cream, and a heating pad?

The patch provides dry heat—without leaving any substance on the skin—for several hours and requires no holding in place. A warming cream applies ingredients to the skin that create a sensation of warmth, without an actual heat source. A heating pad, which must be warmed up before each use, is reusable but must be held in place, which usually means you have to remain seated or lying down.
