When should you use this gradual self-tanning lotion?

Bondi Sands Progressive Self-Tanning Lotion is a body lotion that combines moisturizing care with two self-tanning sugars: dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and erythrulose. It tints the skin gradually: your tan builds up with each application, without sun exposure. It joins our line of moisturizing body lotions, offering formulas that add a touch of color to your skincare routine.

Its milk base moisturizes the skin: aloe vera juice powder, shea butter, and vitamin E complement the formula’s emollients. This product is perfect for daily use—in the morning after a shower or in the evening—without the need for a mitt or a specific application time.

It offers a customizable tan: continue applying until you reach your desired shade, then space out the applications to maintain it. The color remains natural and subtle, making it a great introduction for anyone who has never used a self-tanner or is worried about streaks from a one-time application.

In October, when your summer tan fades unevenly, it helps keep your legs and arms evenly golden. Its formula contains no dyes: no guide color will stain your clothes or sheets—the tan only appears as the DHA develops.

A gradual tan wears off mainly in the shower: harsh cleansers or frequent exfoliation strip away the color as it builds up. For this reason, we recommend Avène Body Gentle Shower Gel, a soap-free formula that cleanses the skin without stripping it. The surface layer of color is thus preserved from one shower to the next; the lotion applied afterward continues to build the tan on skin that remains comfortable.

How should you apply this self-tanning lotion daily?

Directions for Use

Apply evenly to clean, dry skin, just like a moisturizing body lotion, then wash your hands thoroughly. Wait until the skin feels dry to the touch before getting dressed; use daily.

Precautions

  • This product does not contain sunscreen and does not protect against sunburn: the resulting tan provides no UV protection.
  • Repeated unprotected sun exposure while using a self-tanner can increase the risk of skin aging, skin cancer, and other harmful effects, even without sunburn. Apply sunscreen suitable for your skin type whenever you’re in the sun.
  • When exposed to UV rays, skin tanned with DHA produces more free radicals than untreated skin: the tan is never a reason to prolong sun exposure.
  • Test on a small area of the forearm 24 hours before first use.
  • Do not apply to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.
  • Avoid the eye area and lips. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with clean water and consult a healthcare professional if irritation persists.
  • Discontinue use if irritation, redness, or itching occurs.
  • Contains fragrance, as well as amyl salicylate and anisic alcohol, which are allergenic fragrance ingredients: do not use if you have a known allergy to any of these components or to any other ingredient in the formula, including shea butter.
  • For external use only. If swallowed, consult a doctor or call a poison control center.
  • Store at a temperature below 30°C, with the bottle upright. Keep out of reach of children.

Our Expert Tips on Bondi Sands Progressive Self-Tanning Lotion

The downside of progressive self-tanning lotion is its ease of use: applied just like any other lotion, it also stains the palms, nails, and creases of the joints. At the counter, we recommend washing your hands immediately—paying special attention to between your fingers—then blending the product into your elbows, knees, and ankles, where the thicker skin tends to darken more. A thin, even layer is better than a thick one.

This simplicity doesn’t change the key point of this guide: the first precaution. After a few days of application, your complexion looks tanned, and it’s easy to forget to apply sunscreen when spending time in the autumn sun—but that’s precisely when you should remember to do so, regardless of the shade you’ve achieved.

FAQ

Can I use Bondi Sands Progressive Self-Tanning Lotion to maintain a tan achieved with a self-tanning foam?

Yes. Between applications of a traditional self-tanner, the progressive lotion revives the fading color and delays the need to reapply.

What’s the difference between Bondi Sands Progressive Self-Tanning Lotion and an instant self-tanner?

An instant self-tanner develops its color in a single application, which is rinsed off after a few hours. The progressive lotion builds a subtle tan day by day without rinsing. It’s ideal for people who want to control the intensity of their tan.

Can I apply Bondi Sands Progressive Self-Tanning Lotion to my face?

It can be used on the face in a thin layer. Self-tanners formulated for the face are better suited for skin prone to breakouts, since they’re designed not to clog pores.
