Our pharmacist’s tips for easily measuring blood pressure
Always measure your blood pressure at the same time of day. Since each of us experiences approximately 100,000 different blood pressure readings every day, individual measurements are not reliable. Only regular measurements taken at the same times of day, over a long period, allow for a meaningful assessment of blood pressure.
Avoid nicotine and coffee in the hour before measuring your blood pressure at home or at the pharmacy.
After resting for 5 to 10 minutes, take your blood pressure while seated.
Do not measure your blood pressure when you feel a strong urge to urinate. A full bladder can cause blood pressure to rise by approximately 10 mm Hg.
Before measuring your blood pressure, carefully read the blood pressure monitor’s instruction manual. Proper use of blood pressure monitors ensures the quality of measurements and provides accurate results.
If using a wrist blood pressure monitor, keep your wrist at heart level during the measurement. If using an upper-arm blood pressure monitor, your upper arm is automatically at the correct height.
Do not speak or move during the measurement. Speaking increases the readings by approximately 6–7 mm Hg.
Wait at least 1 minute between readings so that the blood vessels are no longer under pressure when you take the next reading.
Record the readings in a logbook: always note the measured readings, any medications taken, and the date and time of the measurement.
Check your blood pressure regularly. Even if your readings have improved, you should continue to monitor your blood pressure as a precaution.
