The thumb brace is indicated to reduce mobility and increase stability in the hand joints in cases of rhizarthrosis andmild thumb sprains. Immobilization can range from partial and gentle to more firm.

Indications for Wrist-Thumb Splints

This orthopedic device is prescribed by physicians following diagnosis in the following cases: sprains, post-surgical immobilization, immobilization of the thumb’s metacarpophalangeal joints in abduction, joint or ligament injuries of the hand and thumb, and rhizarthrosis.

Athumb sprainis an injury to the ligament of the thumb’s metacarpophalangeal joint: theulnar collateral ligament(i.e., the medial collateral ligament of the thumb). When participating in certain sports (handball, volleyball, skiing, or surfing), this injury can occur as a result of an impact that forces the thumb outward away from the hand. The thumb is forced beyond its natural maximum range of motion relative to the hand, the ligament stretches, and a sprain occurs. It is also known as a “skier’s sprain.”

Note that a thumb sprain may sometimes be accompanied by a fracture at the base of the first phalanx.

If the thumb is not immobilized following a sprain, there is a risk of joint instability, leading to reduced grip strength and abnormal movements. Due to these movements and the abnormal functioning of the joint, osteoarthritis of the thumb may develop over time. Osteoarthritis is characterized by the recurrence of pain.

Directions for Use

1. Open the wrist strap
2. Insert your hand into the splint
3. Close and adjust the wrist strap 
4. If necessary, position the elastic strap on the proximal end of the brace, wrap it around the thumb and index finger, then secure it firmly 

Measure the circumference at the wrist crease.

Precautions for Use
