COMPOSITION (summary)
p 15 ml
Codeine 15 mg
Érysimum, dry extract 45 mg
Sucrose 10.28 g
Alcohol 320 mg

INDICATIONS (summary)
This antitussive drug contains an opiate derivative ( codeine ) and a plant extract. Codeine blocks the reflex of the cough by acting directly on the brain.
It is used in the symptomatic treatment of dry coughs.
CONTRAINDICATIONS (summary)
This medication should not be used in the following cases:
  • asthma ,
  • respiratory failure ,
  • a person known to be an ultrafast metabolizer (a person whose activity in the enzymes involved in the codeine metabolism is excessive),
  • child under 12 years of age,
  • breastfeeding .
WARNING (Contents)
This medication is not suitable for the treatment of fatty cough, which is a normal defense mechanism of the body allowing the evacuation of the mucus present in the bronchi.
Cough is a symptom that can reveal many diseases: see your doctor if it persists for more than a few days.
Codeine is partially converted to morphine by an enzyme in the liver. In some people (about 7% of the white population), this enzyme is absent with a consequent lesser effect of codeine. In others (1 to 6% of Europeans, 29% of Africans), the activity of this enzyme is increased, resulting in an increased risk of serious respiratory adverse effects. If you notice any uncomfortable side effects (mental confusion, difficulty breathing), talk to your doctor.
Prolonged high-dose use of codeine is at risk of dependence .
Precautions are necessary in cases of intracranial hypertension which may be exacerbated.
This syrup contains sugar (sucrose) in significant quantity.
Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment.
This medication may induce somnolence, sometimes intense in some people. This drowsiness can be increased by taking alcohol or other sedative drugs. Driving and using hazardous machines are not recommended, especially within hours of taking the medication.
DRUG INTERACTIONS (summary)
Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking a sedative medication (tranquillizers, sleeping pills, certain pain medications containing opioids , antidepressants , neuroleptics ...).
In addition, many antitussive or analgesic drugs contain codeine. Their joint use may lead to a risk of overdosage and an increase in adverse effects.
PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING (summary)
Pregnancy :
The use of codeine and its derivatives (codéthyline, pholcodine) should be considered in pregnant women only if necessary:
  • respiratory failure can occur in the newborn of a mother treated with high doses, even if the treatment is punctual but precedes by little birth;
  • a withdrawal syndrome , on the other hand, can affect newborns if their mother receives regular treatment even at low doses.
It is therefore important to report to the obstetrician the possible use of codeine or a derivative thereof so that these risks can be prevented by monitoring and appropriate treatment.

Breastfeeding:
Passage of codeine into breast milk is low at usual doses, but toxic effects to the infant have been observed in very rare cases. Therefore, this medication is contraindicated during breast-feeding.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGE (summary)
This medication is taken preferably at the time of coughing, within a 6 hour interval between catches.

Usual dosage:

  • Adult: 1 to 2 graduated cups to 15 ml of syrup, 1 to 4 times per day. In patients with hepatic impairment and in the elderly, the initial dosage is usually reduced by half.
  • Children from 40 to 50 kg (over 12 years): 1 graduated cup with 15 ml of syrup, 1 to 4 times a day
TIPS (summary)
A nocturnal cough made worse by this medication may be an allergic cough: ask your doctor for advice.
Smoking is irritating to the bronchi and maintains the cough: Avoid smoking or being exposed to the smoke of others.
Simple measures to calm dry coughs: hot drinks and humidification of the ambient air in dry atmosphere.
Do not store syrup for more than 30 days after opening the bottle.
POSSIBLE ADVERSE EFFECTS (summary)
Constipation, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, feeling dizzy and, more rarely, bronchospasm , allergic skin reaction , slowed breathing. These adverse effects are those of the opiate family; they are generally moderate at the recommended doses.

GLOSSARY (summary)

alcohol
General name designating a family of substances that have the property of being able to be mixed with water and fatty substances. The most common alcohol is ethyl alcohol (ethanol), but there are many other alcohols: methanol, butanol, etc. The degree of alcoholic solution corresponds to the volume of pure alcohol present in 100 ml of solution, knowing that 1 glass of wine or 1/2 of beer (25 cl) contains about 8 g of alcohol.
When alcohol is used as an antiseptic, an unpleasant odor denaturant is often added to prevent drinking. Contrary to a widespread belief, alcohol at 70o (or even 60o) is a better antiseptic than alcohol at 90o.

painkillers
Medication that works against pain. Analgesics act either directly on the centers of pain in the brain or by blocking the transmission of pain to the brain.
Synonym: analgesic.

antidepressants
Medication that works against depression. Some antidepressants are also used to combat obsessive-compulsive disorder, generalized anxiety, certain rebellious pain, enuresis, etc.
Depending on their mode of action and adverse effects, antidepressants are divided into different families: imipraminic antidepressants, serotonin reuptake inhibitors, selective or non-selective MAOIs. Finally, other antidepressants do not belong to any of these families, because they possess original properties.
The mode of action of antidepressants has two main aspects: the relief of moral suffering and the fight against inhibition which removes all will to action from the depressed. There may be a time lag between these two effects: moral suffering may persist, while the capacity for action reappears. During this short period, the risk of suicide in some depressed people can be increased. The physician takes it into account in its prescription (possible association with a tranquillizer) and it must imperatively be respected.

antitussives
Medication that fights cough. The most potent antitussives contain codeine or codethylamine.

asthma
Disease characterized by difficulty breathing, often resulting in wheezing. Asthma, permanent or occurring by crisis, is due to a narrowing and inflammation of the bronchi.

bronchospasm
Abnormal bronchial contraction resulting in difficult and often wheezing breathing. Bronchospasm is one of the factors responsible for asthma.

codeine
Substance extracted from the poppy (opium), used for its sedative properties on the central nervous system, in particular:
  • on the nervous centers of the cough (antitussive action),
  • on the nerve centers of pain (analgesic action).
This global sedative action is unfortunately causing inconvenient somnolence, when codeine is taken in high doses.
Moreover, the chemical kinship with morphine exposes a risk of dependence in case of prolonged treatment at high dose. However, codeine remains the most effective antitussive agent and a powerful analgesic agent, especially in combination with paracetamol.

addiction
Psychic or physical need caused by taking certain natural or medicinal substances. This condition may be accompanied, at cessation of the catch, by various symptoms, grouped under the term of withdrawal syndrome.

enzymes
A substance capable of activating a specific chemical reaction.

intracranial hypertension
Excess pressure inside the skull, due to hematoma, edema, or brain tumor. This rare condition is diagnosed by an ophthalmologic examination of the fundus of the eye. The pain of intracranial hypertension, intense, permanent and lasting, should not be confused with a mild headache or migraine, which usually give in a few hours or days.

Hepatic insufficiency
Inability of the liver to perform its function, which is essentially the elimination of some waste, but also the synthesis of many biological substances essential to the body: albumin, cholesterol and coagulation factors (vitamin K, etc.).

respiratory failure
Inability of the lungs to properly oxygenate the blood and remove excess carbon dioxide.

metabolism
All the transformation actions carried out by the organization, resulting in the creation of energy or the development of various substances. Anabolism (metabolism of manufacture) is distinguished from catabolism (degradation metabolism).

neuroleptics
Family of medicines used in the treatment of certain nervous disorders or various symptoms: digestive disorders, menopausal disorders, etc.

opiate
A chemical family that includes opium and its derivatives. In addition to drugs such as opium or heroin, the opiate family includes morphine (strong analgesic), codeine (antitussive and analgesic) and many other substances.

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to hypersensitivity of the organism to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a wide variety of aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

sedatives
  • Quiets, calms down.
  • Medication belonging to different families: anxiolytics, hypnotics, analgesics, antitussives, antiepileptics, neuroleptics, etc. but also antidepressants, antihistamines H1, antihypertensives. A sedative can be responsible for drowsiness and increase the effects of alcohol.

sugar
General term for various substances of which the most widely used is sucrose. Other sugars can be contained in drugs: glucose, fructose, lactose, etc. Glucose is the sugar used by the body; it is the only one to circulate in considerable quantity in the blood.
Sweeteners (false sugar) are allowed in diabetics or people on a diet, and are very low in calories.

overdose
Taking an excessive amount of a drug exposes you to an increase in the intensity of adverse effects, or even to the appearance of particular adverse effects.
This overdose may result from accidental or voluntary poisoning for suicide, so consult your local Poison Control Center (listed in the appendix to the book). However, in most cases, overdose is the result of an error in the understanding of the prescription, or the search for an increase in efficacy by exceeding the recommended dosage. Finally, untimely self-medication may lead to excessive absorption of the same substance contained in different drugs. Some drugs are particularly prone to this risk because they are (wrongly) considered to be harmless: vitamins A and D, aspirin, etc. Stopping or decreasing drug intake helps to remove the disorders associated with an overdose.

symptom
Trouble felt by a person with an illness. The same symptom can translate different diseases and the same disease does not necessarily give the same symptoms in all the patients.

withdrawal syndrome
Reaction due to the sudden deprivation of a substance (drug, toxic, alcohol, etc.) to which the organism has been accustomed. Some medications taken during pregnancy may cause this reaction in the newborn. A particular form of weaning syndrome is the lack of drug addicts when they are drug-free.

symptomatic treatment
Treatment that suppresses or alleviates the symptoms of a disease without addressing its cause.

The use of this medication is dangerous for alcoholics and should be taken into account in pregnant or lactating women, children and high-risk groups such as hepatic impairment or epileptics. Ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine

Due to the presence of red cochineal A, this drug can cause allergic reactions, even asthma, especially in people allergic to aspirin.

Do not use this medicine for a cough. In this case coughing is a natural means of defense necessary for the evacuation of bronchial secretions.

If the symptoms persist or if the cough becomes oily or is accompanied by bronchial congestion, expectoration (rejection by spitting bronchial secretions), fever, seek advice from your doctor.

In case of chronic (long) shortness of the bronchi and lungs accompanied by expectoration, medical advice is essential.

Codeine is transformed into morphine by an enzyme in the liver. Morphine is the substance that produces the effects of codeine. Some people have variants of this enzyme, which can have a different impact according to people. Thus, in some of them, codeine is very little or not at all transformed into morphine by the body. The codeine administered will have no effect on their cough. Other people are more likely to experience serious adverse effects because a very large amount of morphine is produced. If you notice any of the following side effects, stop taking this medicine and consult a doctor immediately: slow or shallow breathing, mental confusion, drowsiness, contracted pupils, nausea or vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite.

Precautions for use

In case of liver failure (severe liver disease) or chronic liver disease, ASK YOUR DOCTOR'S ADVICE (see section 3. below).

Alcoholic beverages are not recommended during this treatment.
