LEXICON (summary)

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort that occurs after contact with a particular substance, use of a drug, or ingestion of a food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive disorders.

anesthetic
Drug that causes anesthesia. In addition to general anesthetics that allow patients to sleep before an operation, there are local anesthetics, which can be injected into contact with a nerve to numb a region of the body. Local anesthetics are also called contact anesthetics.

analgesic
Drug that acts against pain. Analgesics act either directly on the centers of pain located in the brain, or by blocking the transmission of pain to the brain.
Synonym: analgesic.

antibiotic
Substance capable of blocking the multiplication of certain bacteria or killing them. The spectrum of an antibiotic is the set of bacteria on which this product is usually active. Unlike bacteria, viruses are not susceptible to antibiotics. The first antibiotics were extracted from fungal cultures: penicillium (penicillin), streptomyces (streptomycin). They are currently manufactured by chemical synthesis. Antibiotics are divided into families: penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines (cyclins), sulfonamides, aminoglycosides, lincosanides, phenicolates, polymyxins, quinolones, imidazoles, etc.
Inappropriate use of antibiotics can promote resistance: use an antibiotic only on prescription, respect its dosage and duration, do not give and do not advise another person an antibiotic that you have been prescribed .

antiseptic
A substance that destroys bacteria locally, reducing their numbers and preventing their proliferation. Some antiseptics are also active on microscopic fungi and viruses.

mouth ulcers
Very painful lesion of the mouth, having the appearance of a yellowish or gray spot, slightly hollowed out. The healing is usually spontaneous after a few days.
Stress, fatigue and certain foods (nuts, hazelnuts, gruyere, citrus fruits ...) can cause an outbreak of canker sores. In very rare cases, canker sores may be due to disease or medication.

mouthwash
Drug that acts by contact on the back of the throat and the inner walls of the mouth. It is administered by spraying or whitewashing.

gargle
A local treatment that aims to leave a pure or diluted drug in cold or warm water in contact with the back of the throat. It is practiced with the head bent backwards, a continuous expiration preventing the liquid from descending into the lungs. The solution used should not be swallowed.

pharyngitis
Inflammation or infection of the pharynx.

phenylketonuria
Hereditary disease that is characterized by the absence of an enzyme and leads to the accumulation in the blood of a toxic product. Its screening is systematic at birth. Treatment is based on a specific diet during infancy.

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

Allergic reaction
Reaction due to the hypersensitivity of the body to a drug. Allergic reactions can be very varied: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, rash of measles-like pimples, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort by sudden drop in blood pressure.

sugar
A general term for various substances, the most common of which is sucrose. Other sugars may be contained in the drugs: glucose, fructose, lactose, etc. Glucose is the sugar used by the body; it is the only one to circulate in a notable quantity in the blood.
Sweeteners (fake sugar) are allowed in diabetics or people on a diet, and are very low calorie.

way
  • Path (route of administration) used to administer the drugs: oral, sublingual, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intradermal, transdermal.
  • Set of hollow organs allowing the passage of air (airways), food (digestive tract), urine (urinary tract), bile (bile ducts), etc.
