Our advice and opinions from pharmacy experts

The benefits of Omega-3 for the heart

Omega-3s, unsaturated fats, are called essential fatty acids because the body cannot synthesize them and must therefore come from food. They help cell membranes and sheaths that isolate nerves to build up, provide adequate blood clotting, and allow muscles to contract and relax. Research in recent years has established that in addition to their contribution to the normal functioning of the body, some have therapeutic properties. They can drastically reduce the risk of heart problems and other serious illnesses, as well as stem the symptoms of various conditions.

The two types of omega-3s associated with improved health are docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The best source of DHA and EPA is fish, but they are also available as supplements. In fact, the average lipid intake of the French is within the range of the recommended nutritional intake recommendations (between 35 and 40%). But in detail, we observe that this consumption is not well balanced between omega 3, 6 and 9 and that the French always eat too much saturated fatty acids bad for cardiovascular health.

Always too much saturated fatty acids and still not enough omega 3 and 9. If the French consume enough lipids and mostly fill up with omega 6, they have not yet succeeded in eliminating the excess of acids saturated fat and integrate the right dosage of omega 3 and omega 9 into their diet.

LEXICON (summary)

anticoagulant
A drug that prevents blood from clotting and prevents clots from forming in the blood vessels.
Anticoagulants are used to treat or prevent phlebitis, pulmonary embolism, certain infarcts. They also help prevent clots in the heart during rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation or in case of artificial heart valve.
There are two main types of anticoagulants:
  • oral anticoagulants, which block the action of vitamin K (antivitamin K, or AVK) and whose effectiveness is controlled by a blood test: the INR (formerly TP);
  • injectable anticoagulants, derived from heparin, the effectiveness of which can be controlled by the blood test of the anti-Xa activity, the Howell's Time (TH) or the Kaolin Cephalin Time (TCK) depending on the products used. Regular dosing of blood platelets is necessary throughout the duration of use of a heparin derivative.

hemorrhage
Loss of blood from an artery or vein. Hemorrhage can be external, but also internal and go unnoticed.

hyperglycemia
Abnormal elevation of blood sugar (blood sugar).

myocardial infarction
Destruction of part of the heart muscle (myocardium), deprived of blood by obstruction of its arteries.

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to dispose of waste or drugs. Advanced renal failure does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine eliminated. Only a blood test and the determination of creatinine can reveal this disease.

transaminases
Enzymes dosed in the blood, the rate of which rises during certain hepatitis. They appear in blood tests under the name of SGOT and SGPT or ASAT and ALAT.

triglycerides
Fats circulating in the blood. They come mainly from the assimilation of fats, sugars and alcohol.
