The oral microbiota, one of the etiological factors of pancreatic cancer

It is now accepted that oral microbiota plays an important role in human health. Recent studies have shown that poor oral health and the presence of circulating antibodies that select certain oral pathogens would be associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer. The results, just published, of the follow-up of a large case-control study shed new light on this subject.

Some oral bacteria may be associated with an increased risk of pancreatic cancer

The presence of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans has been associated with a higher risk of pancreatic cancer.
Although the association between the presence of A. Actinomycetemcomitans and the risk of pancreatic cancer tended to be higher among people who consumed alcohol than those who did not, this difference was not statistically significant. Similarly, the association between the presence of this pathogen and the risk of pancreatic cancer in smokers was not statistically significant compared to non-smokers.
On the other hand, the presence of Fusobacterium and Leptotrichia was associated with a decrease in the risk of pancreatic cancer, as a percentage of increase in relative abundance.

This study provides additional evidence for the role of oral microbiota in the etiology of pancreatic cancers.

Our expert advice Lactibiane Buccodental Pileje micronutrition

For decades, bacteria called probiotics are added to foods because of their beneficial effects for human health. The mechanisms of action of probiotics is related to their ability to compete with pathogens for adhesion sites, exercise of the vis-a-vis antagonism of these pathogens or modulate the immune response of the host.

Recently, the potential application of probiotics for oral health has attracted the interest of several research teams. Despite the lack of clinical studies conducted to date, the results suggest that probiotics could be used for the prevention and treatment of oral infections, including dental caries, periodontal disease and halitosis.
