GLOSSARY (summary)

allergy
Skin reaction (itching, pimples, swelling) or general discomfort occurring after contact with a particular substance, use of a medication, or ingestion of food. The main forms of allergy are eczema, urticaria, asthma, angioedema and allergic shock (anaphylactic shock). Food allergy can also result in digestive disorders.

quaternary ammoniums
Family of antiseptics present in many medicines of local use. Generally well supported, they can however give rise to rare allergies.

antiseptic
A substance that locally destroys bacteria, reducing their numbers and preventing their proliferation. Some antiseptics are also active on microscopic fungi and viruses.

conjunctivitis
Inflammation of the conjunctiva, due to foreign body, allergy, infection or irritant.

cul-de-sac conjunctival
A space formed when the lower eyelid is pulled down, which detaches from the eye and forms a cavity. The drops of eye drops and the ophthalmic ointments must be placed in it. The drug is distributed naturally throughout the eye. It will be eliminated, like the tears, by the lacrymal canal, which evacuates the tears towards the nose.

contact lenses
A flexible or rigid optical device placed on the cornea for correcting a defect in vision.
The lenses currently used are all made of plastic. There are two types:
  • Rigid lenses, more or less permeable to oxygen. Their small diameter (they do not cover the entire cornea) facilitates the oxygenation of the cornea: the oxygen contained in the tears can diffuse under and around the lens.
  • Soft lenses, more or less hydrophilic. They are easier to support at the beginning, but their large diameter and limited oxygen permeability do not facilitate oxygenation of the cornea. They can pose long-term tolerance problems.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to hypersensitivity of the organism to a drug. Allergic reactions can take a wide variety of aspects: urticaria, angioedema, eczema, eruption of pimples resembling measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

treatment
Treatment that complements the action of a specific treatment, but generally does not achieve healing on its own.
