Digestive functioning
The digestive system is particularly rich in nerve fibers, hence the term "second brain" which is often attributed to it. In fact, the entire digestive system is subject to the vegetative nervous system which completely escapes the will and consciousness. This system is composed of two kinds of fibers: the sympathetic which decrease the activity of the digestive system and the parasympathetic which exert the opposite effect. They act at the same time, the ones sometimes taking precedence over the others. For example, para-sympathetic nerve fibers activate the acidity of the stomach while sympathetic nerves slow it down. It suffices that the former, for various reasons, become more agitated than the latter for one to experience heartburn, a digestive disorder common especially in people who are stressed.
