How to treat a crack at the corner of the mouth, the angular cheilitis?
Perlèche (or angular cheilitis) is an inflammatory skin lesion located at the corners of the lips. When it persists, a doctor should be consulted as it may be linked to a local bacterial or mycotic infection.
If the chapping is of bacterial origin , the doctor will prescribe a local antibiotic in the form of a cream. If it is due to a yeast infection, local antifungal treatment will be more effective.
A type of fungus called Candida can cause infections in the mouth and throat, and even on the lips. This latter type of infection is the perlèche . When the lips are affected by candidiasis, the corners of the mouth may be cracked and reddened.
If the cause of angular cheilitis is infectious, the bacteria or fungus should be treated with an antigungal ointment such as Lomexin 2% cream for 6 to 7 days as advised by your doctor.
