Historical
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) gives the astragalus root an important place in its therapeutic arsenal. It is used as a tonic or to treat various diseases, or to prevent the weakening of the patient, while protecting him against infections. TCM gives it the power to "stabilize the outside," that is, it would help create a kind of shield against infections. It is recommended to take it mainly as a preventive measure, especially against respiratory infections.
In addition, astragalus is used in many traditional medicinal preparations commonly used in China and elsewhere in Asia, particularly in Japan (Kempo medicine).
In the nineteenth century, the eclectic medical school (United States) popularized the use of astragalus root to stimulate the immune system. Many astragalic tonics then appeared on the market and enjoyed some popularity in America.
In the late 1980s, China experienced an epidemic of myocardia. The disease was caused by Coxsackie B, a virus that attacks the heart muscle. In 1987, Chinese researchers demonstrated that a preparation containing astragalus could be useful in combating the harmful effects of this virus. At the time, it was the only remedy that could help stop the epidemic.
