The benefits of Mycotherapy in the context of cancer: Research Hifas da Terra
The Hifas da Terra laboratory is engaged in in-depth research into the benefits of mycotherapy in the context of cancer. With more than 540 species of medicinal mushrooms recognized by conventional medicine, many of which have beneficial properties in various areas of health, our laboratory has focused its efforts on exploring the anti-cancer properties of these mushrooms.
Several significant studies have been conducted to support our research. For example, one study demonstrated that dried T. versicolor mycelium increased lymphocyte counts and Natural Killer cell activity in breast cancer patients treated with radiation therapy. Another study involving 100 patients with gynecological cancers showed that Agaricus brasiliensis Murrill extract, administered in conjunction with chemotherapy , induced a significant increase in Natural Killer cell activity compared to placebo. Additionally, research on stage II and III colorectal cancer patients showed that PSK extract, combined with chemotherapy, increased the number of Natural Killer cells and reduced the risk of recurrence .
Alongside improving the immune response , mycotherapy has also demonstrated benefits for the quality of life of patients undergoing anticancer treatment . Studies have shown that Agaricus brasiliensis Murrill extract improved appetite, reduced hair loss, promoted emotional stability, and alleviated general weakness in patients with gynecological cancers. Additionally, Lentinula edodes mycelium extract, administered with chemotherapy, helped eliminate side effects such as nausea and abdominal pain in patients with gastric and colorectal cancer.
