The common beech (Beech in English language) or Fagus sylvatica is a tree of the Fagaceae family. Its particularity is to live away from many plants, because rare are those which can develop at its foot. Under a rather domineering appearance, it is vulnerable to strong winds due to the superficiality of its rooting. Common beech is a tree that is frequently found in isolation, in beech groves or near Scots pine and spruce. Benefiting from the protection of other trees, it can reach a height of forty meters and live between two hundred and three hundred years.
Botanically, the beech has a blackish gray bark, smooth and thin, which is frequently covered with epiphytic plants. Its deciduous foliage is composed of alternate leaves, light green, crenellated, oval in shape, which in autumn take on copper tones. This monoecious tree bears both male and female flowers - catkins - which bloom in spring just after leafing. Its fruits, called beechnuts, are achenes whose physical appearance evokes small chestnuts. Common beech begins to bear fruit when it reaches sixty years.
