Our advice and advice from natural health experts

Paracetamol: pharmacodynamics (how it works)
Paracetamol is an analgesic or painkiller as well as an antipyretic (reduces fever). Although it is an old drug, its mode of action is poorly understood. It would have a central (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral mechanism of action.

Paracetamol could act mainly by blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins in the central nervous system and, to a lesser extent, by blocking the production of pain impulses in the peripheral system. Peripheral action may also be due to blockade of prostaglandin synthesis or of the synthesis or actions of other substances which sensitize pain receptors to mechanical or chemical stimulation.

GLOSSARY (summary)

analgesic
Drug that acts against pain. Analgesics work either directly on pain centers in the brain or by blocking the transmission of pain to the brain.
Synonym: pain reliever.

anticoagulant
Drug that prevents the blood from clotting and therefore prevents the formation of clots in the blood vessels.
Anticoagulants are used to treat or prevent phlebitis, pulmonary embolism, certain heart attacks. They also help prevent blood clots from forming in the heart during rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation or in the event of an artificial heart valve.
There are two main types of anticoagulants:
  • oral anticoagulants, which block the action of vitamin K (antivitamin K, or AVK) and whose effectiveness is monitored by a blood test: INR (formerly TP);
  • injectable anticoagulants, heparin derivatives, the effectiveness of which can be monitored by the blood dosage of anti-Xa activity, Howell's time (TH) or Cephalin Kaolin time (TCK) depending on the products used. Regular dosage of blood platelets is necessary throughout the duration of use of a heparin derivative.

antipyretic
Medicine used to lower the body temperature during fever attacks.

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to eliminate wastes or drugs. Advanced kidney disease does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine passed. Only a blood test and the determination of creatinine can reveal this disease.

blood count
The count measures the number of red blood cells (red blood cells), white blood cells (leukocytes) and platelets in the blood. The blood formula specifies the percentage of different white blood cells: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes, monocytes.
Abbreviation: NFS.

orodispersible
Qualifies a tablet which disintegrates in the mouth on contact with saliva. It can also be dispersed in a glass of water before ingestion.

phenylketonuria
Hereditary disease characterized by the absence of an enzyme and which leads to the accumulation in the blood of a toxic product. Its screening is systematic at birth. Treatment is based on a specific diet during early childhood.

dosage
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to the body's hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can take on a wide variety of aspects: hives, angioedema, eczema, rash reminiscent of measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

overdose
Taking too much of a drug exposes the intensity of the side effects to an increase, or even the appearance of specific side effects.
This overdose can result from accidental poisoning, or intentional with the aim of suicide: it is then advisable to consult the poison control center of your region (list in appendix of the book). But most often, the overdose is the consequence of an error in understanding the prescription, or of the search for an increase in effectiveness by exceeding the recommended dosage. Finally, untimely self-medication can lead to excessive absorption of the same substance contained in different drugs. Certain drugs are more particularly exposed to this risk, because they are considered (wrongly) as harmless: vitamins A and D, aspirin, etc. Stopping or reducing drug intake can eliminate the disorders associated with an overdose.
