What is earwax?
Earwax protects the ear canal and helps eliminate bacteria and dust. Sometimes it accumulates in this duct and the mouth. This phenomenon can be due to an increase in production, or to poor drainage of earwax. In any case, the plug can cause bothersome symptoms (hearing loss, mild pain).
What is a plug of earwax?
A plug of earwax is an unusual build-up of this substance in the ear canal (or "canal").
Waxy in consistency and yellow or even brown in color, earwax is produced by specific glands called "ceruminous", present in the skin of the ear canal. It also contains sebum and dander (small dead skin).
Its role is to protect the walls of the duct from water that could enter it and to trap foreign bodies (eg dust) and bacteria, which are then eliminated thanks to the antibacterial properties of earwax.
Normally, this substance is gradually expelled towards the entrance of the ear canal thanks to the movements of the jaws, during chewing. However, earwax sometimes forms a plug that obstructs the duct.
