What is age-related macular degeneration (AMD)?
It is an eye disease that is characterized by loss of central vision, details and colors. It is caused by an alteration of the macula (area of the retina most incident to light rays). It often appears from the age of 50 and is directly related to aging.
The telltale signs of AMD:
- Fall of vision (sharpness, contrasts);
- Feeling of darkening or less brightness (need to intensify the lighting to read);
- Visual fog or blur;
- Color fading;
- Visual deformations (metamorphopsia), particularly noticeable on straight lines such as the edge of a frame or window;
- Perception of a spot (scotoma) in the center of the vision;
- Missing letters in a text;
- Difficulty in distinguishing the details.
