The advice of your expert pharmacist - How to treat stomach ache

Treating stomach ache first involves treating its cause. However if there are no warning signs for pain to be treated very quickly or urgently then the first treatment is to try to relax and breathe calmly, with abdominal breathing, avoiding eating if this causes pain and / or vomiting and drinking lots of water.

If the cause of the pain has already been identified by a doctor, and that an assessment has already been made, it is possible to apply the doctor's practical advice and take medication if necessary:

  • Paracetamol type analgesics can be used while respecting the number of doses per day and absolutely avoiding aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Antispasmodics (more effective than pain relievers) can also be used to reduce intestinal contractions.
  • In case of colic and irritable intestine it is especially the use of thickeners or absorbent topicals which act as intestinal dressings which will be used. These topicals act by absorbing water in the colon like a sponge and then increase the consistency of the stools and by fixing toxins, gases and substances of fermentation, they are a perfect indication in the event of bloating. These topicals include molecules such as vegetable charcoal , simethicone or even earthy powders (diosmectite).
  • Finally, in the case of treatment of irritable bowel, symptomatic laxative treatments or transit slowing down can be associated.

For more advice, don't hesitate to ask your pharmacist for advice .
