GLOSSARY (summary)

cyclins
Family of antibiotics used in particular in the treatment of acne and certain genital infections.

digitalis
A family of drugs related to digitalis, a substance derived from the foxglove (common plant). Digitalis, used in cardiology, slow down the heart and strengthen its contractions.

diuretics
Drug allowing increased elimination of water by the kidneys. Most often, this water loss follows the loss of salts caused by the drug (salidiuretic).
Diuretics are mainly used in the treatment of arterial hypertension, although their mechanism of action in this disease is poorly understood. They are also prescribed in acute or chronic heart failure, edema and other more rare conditions.
These medicines cause a loss of sodium and potassium (except for some of them called "potassium sparers"). Their prolonged intake therefore requires regular monitoring of blood potassium, to avoid cardiac disorders which could result from hypokalaemia (lack of potassium in the blood). Lack of sodium is another possible consequence, but rarer at usual dosages, of prolonged use of diuretics; it is also detected by a blood test.

renal failure
Inability of the kidneys to eliminate wastes or drugs. Advanced kidney disease does not necessarily result in a decrease in the amount of urine passed. Only a blood test and the determination of creatinine can reveal this disease.

lithiasis
Concretion (stone) which forms in the excretory tracts of certain organs: urinary tract, biliary, salivary.
Synonym: calculation.

digestive dressings
Drug that protects the digestive tract by lining the mucous membrane with a protective film and reducing the acidity of the stomach. This type of medicine may interfere with the absorption of other medicines.

dosages
Quantity and distribution of the dose of a drug according to the age, weight and general condition of the patient.

allergic reaction
Reaction due to the body's hypersensitivity to a drug. Allergic reactions can take on a wide variety of aspects: hives, angioedema, eczema, rash reminiscent of measles, etc. Anaphylactic shock is a generalized allergic reaction that causes discomfort due to a sudden drop in blood pressure.

overdose
Taking too much of a drug exposes the intensity of the side effects to an increase, or even the appearance of specific side effects.
This overdose can result from accidental poisoning, or intentional with the aim of suicide: it is then advisable to consult the poison control center of your region (list in appendix of the book). But most often, the overdose is the consequence of an error in understanding the prescription, or of the search for an increase in effectiveness by exceeding the recommended dosage. Finally, untimely self-medication can lead to excessive absorption of the same substance contained in different drugs. Certain drugs are more particularly exposed to this risk, because they are considered (wrongly) as harmless: vitamins A and D, aspirin, etc. Stopping or reducing drug intake can eliminate the disorders associated with an overdose.

UI
Abbreviation for international unit. A standardized unit of measure that indicates the activity of a substance.

vitamins
Substance essential for the growth and proper functioning of the organism. Vitamin requirements are normally covered by a varied diet. In developed countries, only vitamin D deficiency, in young children or old people with little exposure to the sun, justifies systematic supplementation. An intake greater than the needs, by drugs in particular, can be at the origin of an overdose and various disorders (vitamins A and D mainly).
