What to do when a dog is scratching ...
If your dog's itching is recent, the first thing to do is treat your pet for fleas. Check that the pest control you apply to it is also effective against summer fungus. Also treat the dog's environment where fleas can persist and re-infest the animal after treatment. Fleas or their faeces are not always visible on an animal, so it is advisable, in the absence of any other cause of obvious pruritus, to start there.
If this treatment is not effective and the itching persists, consult a veterinarian for a complete dermatological examination.
