Our advice and expert advice in pharmacy
Why do I have dry hands ?
Your skin is irritated and can no longer maintain its optimum level of hydration.
It is linked, for the most part, to small repeated aggressions: contact with water, soap, cleaning products, etc. The simple fact of washing your hands as often as it is recommended (every time you go to the toilet or flush, before cooking or eating, etc.) is enough to make your hands dry.
Often, we only realize that in winter because cold and wet weather is another aggression, which can make the problem more visible or more painful.
Once winter is over, the hands cry for help. Dry by the cold, they become rough, itchy, and can even be covered with sores if not cared for.
For people who have occasional or chronic chapped hands, the following measures can help prevent the problem from getting worse (by combining it with the prescribed medical treatment, if applicable):
- Avoid prolonged exposure to external elements: cold, sun, wind (wear gloves or mittens early in the fall.)
- Wash hands with lukewarm or cold water rather than warm.
- Prefer a soap-free cleanser or a mild, moisturizing soap.
- Apply a moisturizer after each wash and when the hands begin to dry. Some natural products also work miracles: cocoa butter, lanolin or shea butter.
- Avoid using antibacterial soaps (or gels), which are aggressive to the skin.
- Wear gloves to do the usual household chores.
