Mild, moderate or severe dandruff is very common and affects both women and men. Pelicullary conditions can appear at any time and all types of hair and all scalps are affected. This excessive desquamation of the scalp is caused either by the colonization of a yeast (= fungus), or a genetic ground revealed by environmental factors.
Dandruff is caused by the unusual multiplication of a microorganism from the Malassezia yeast family. This leads to a much too rapid renewal of the cells of the epidermis which form a cluster in the scalp. It thus forms large dandruff that peel off or adherent dandruff , greasy in appearance and yellowish gray in color.
They can cause irritation of the scalp as well as itching sensations of varying intensity. Dandruff is visible in the hair and usually falls on the neck and shoulders, especially when styling. Certain environmental factors such as pollution, stress or fatigue can promote or increase the proliferation of Malassezia and therefore the appearance of dandruff.
Dry dandruff and oily dandruff are differentiated by their appearance, which can indicate the type of disorder involved.
