The advice of your pharmacist for the treatment of colds in infants

What is the difference between the common cold and the flu?

Many parents find it difficult to tell the difference between a cold and the flu. Both are viral infections, but the common cold is much more common (and less debilitating) than the flu.

A cold

  • Stuffed and runny nose. The secretions may be slightly tinted, especially in the morning, yellow-greenish in color.
  • The virus is restricted to the respiratory tract.
  • Sore throat, slight cough.
  • There may be a slight fever (less than 39 C).
  • Lasts about a week.

Influenza

  • General state of weakness and fatigue.
  • High fever (over 39 C).
  • Congested and runny nose with colored secretions (going from yellow to green) at all times.
  • Sore throat, big cough.
  • Sore muscles.
  • Lasts at least 10 days, can be up to 2 weeks.

What treatment to treat a cold and cough in an infant?

It is important to accompany the administration of Coquelusedal suppositories with regular nose washings with physiological saline . They must be done very regularly during the day and even at night especially if it is a young infant. Paracetamol can be used to lower fever.

See a doctor if your baby has had a cough for several days , has had a fever for 48 hours, his breathing is difficult (you hear wheezing, rattling or crackling), his cough becomes oily and has a unusual behavior.
