How to treat allergic rhinitis with drugs in the pharmacy?

RhinAdvil Cold is a medicine that contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug with analgesic properties, ibuprofen and a vasoconstrictor, pseudoephérine hydrochloride. RhinAdvil Cold is indicated for colds in adolescents (15-17 years) and adults, for the symptomatic treatment of stuffy nose sensations accompanied by headache and / or fever.

Allergic rhinitis and hay fever

Hay fever (or allergic rhinitis) causes symptoms almost identical to those of the common cold of viral origin. It is very disabling at certain times of the year, or even all year round if it is a so-called perennial allergic rhinitis. Some hay fever relief medications are available without a prescription.

Most often, hay fever, or allergic rhinitis, is a seasonal allergy linked to pollen production: from February to April for tree pollens, from May to July for those of grasses, and from August to October for herbaceous plants. However, other substances can cause allergic rhinitis, such as dust mites and their waste, animal hair, or certain chemicals. The allergy can then appear all year round, it is said to be perennial.

Different forms of rhinitis allergy

  • Allergies can manifest themselves in a variety of ways. They can affect all organs:
  • nasal form: allergic rhinitis or "hay fever";
  • respiratory form: asthma attack;
  • ocular form: allergic conjunctivitis;
  • cutaneous form: exanthema, urticaria, atopic dermatitis;
  • angioedema resulting in swelling of certain areas of the body, especially the face (lips, eyelids);
  • anaphylactic shock (general malaise) requiring emergency treatment.

Which medicine to choose for rhinitis?

There are different types of medications that help relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis . The choice of treatment depends in particular on the intensity of the symptoms. Some medicines are to be taken by mouth, others by the nasal route or in the form of eye drops.

The treatment of allergic rhinitis begins with the removal of allergenic substances, when possible. An antihistamine medication is often prescribed, to be taken orally or nasally. The corticosteroids in nasal suspension are also prescribed but they expose to more undesirable effects: nosebleed, irritation, weakening of the nasal mucosa in the event of prolonged treatment. The duration of their use should be limited.

  • Oral antihistamines

H1 antihistamines block the production of histamine, a substance that plays a major role in triggering allergic reactions. Antihistamines in the form of tablets, capsules, eye drops or oral solutions are active in reducing runny nose, itchy nose and sneezing, as well as itching in the throat and eyes.

  • Antihistamines that are not very sedating

The most recent type H1 antihistamines (so-called 2nd generation antihistamines) are generally not very sedating at the recommended doses. Some presentations containing cetirizine or loratadine are available without a prescription. Their use in self-medication is however reserved for adults and children over twelve years old. They should not be used for more than seven days without medical advice.

  • Sedative antihistamines

The oldest type H1 antihistamines (so-called first generation antihistamines) have a sedative effect which can induce sometimes intense drowsiness in some people. This must be taken into account, especially when driving a car or using dangerous machines. They can also have atropine side effects (dry mouth, constipation, accommodation disorders, blockage of urine). Therefore, these drugs are contraindicated in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma or with an enlarged prostate.Some of these antihistamines (PHENERGAN, PRIMALAN) belong to the chemical family of phenothiazines: they expose to a rare, but serious risk of agranulocytosis (decrease in white blood cells in the blood).

  • Nasal antihistamines

Antihistamine based antiallergic nasal solutions may also be useful in the treatment of allergic rhinitis, but they do not work for eye disorders.

  • Nasal corticosteroids

Corticosteroids in nasal suspensions are particularly effective in cases of allergic rhinitis, thanks to their anti-inflammatory activity on the mucous membranes of the nose, but they expose to more undesirable effects than other nasal treatments: nosebleeds, irritation, weakening of the nasal mucosa in the event of prolonged treatment. The duration of their use should be limited.

These drugs can only be sold by prescription , with the exception of HUMEX RHUME DES FOINS, which can be accessed directly in some pharmacies. It is reserved for the treatment of allergic rhinitis in adults and should only be used in the event of recurrence of symptoms already diagnosed by a doctor.

A nasal solution combining an antihistamine and a corticosteroid may be offered to people who are not getting enough relief from an antihistamine or a corticosteroid alone.

  • Eye drops to relieve eye symptoms of allergic rhinitis

H1 antihistamines in eye drops are also indicated for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis when associated with rhinitis. Single-dose presentations are to be preferred.

Advice from your pharmacist

The attitude to have when faced with symptoms resembling hay fever varies depending on whether the disease has been diagnosed in the past or not. If you suspect hay fever without having known it before, a medical consultation is necessary. Otherwise, people who regularly experience this type of problem can use antihistamine medications available without a prescription , according to their doctor's advice.
