First of all, to adopt
the most suitable toothbrush, it is strongly recommended to seek advice from your dentist. All dentists will tell you and repeat it: prevention is the best treatment!
Several elements must be taken into account when choosing your
toothbrush :
- A small brush head and well-developed bristles to get you into the trickier areas.
- Soft bristles: your toothbrush should have soft bristles, which do not damage your teeth and gums.
- A comfortable handle: Many brushes have non-slip handles, which make them easier to use even when wet.
Remember that the regular replacement of your brush helps to maintain a good level of oral hygiene: clinical studies show, in fact, that a new brush can remove up to 30% more plaque than a three month old brush.
The way you hold the toothbrush depends on the tooth and the part of the tooth you are brushing.
- Start with the outer and inner surfaces, then brush at a 45 degree angle in small strokes half a tooth wide against the gum line ,
- Then move on to the chewing surfaces,
- Once you get to the inner surfaces of your front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and use gentle up and down motions with the tip of the toothbrush,
- Be sure to brush your teeth gently along the gum line,
- Brush your tongue in a back-to-face sweeping motion to remove food particles and help remove hanging bacteria there.
To ensure good oral hygiene, dentists recommend brushing for 2 to 3 minutes, or between 30 and 45 seconds per area of your mouth 2 to 3 times a day; morning and evening brushings are imperative. The lunch is also recommended if you can physically organize it at your place of work or study.
Like any treatment protocol, the results on preserving the health of your teeth and gums will be obtained by daily monitoring; it is a good habit to take, it will quickly become natural.
For more information, do not hesitate to ask your dentist for advice. There is no substitute for a visit to the dentist, and it is good
oral hygiene practice to visit your dentist at least twice a year.
