Advice from our pharmacists

The function of vitamin C
Vitamin C is responsible for the proper functioning of the immune system, the skin and connective tissues, the walls of blood vessels, the gums, eyesight, nerves, your mood, your concentration, your sleep and your stress management.
Vitamin C plays an important role as an antioxidant in the body (fights against free radicals that cause disease) and stimulates the absorption of iron.

Colorful fruits and vegetables (especially blackcurrant, kiwi, bell pepper, broccoli and parsley) offer the highest concentration of natural vitamin C. It is better to consume them quickly after their purchase (or as soon as picked for the lucky ones) and raw, preferably, because vitamin C hardly resists air, heat and light.
If you cook them, limit their cooking time or save the cooking water to make a soup. Don't forget the citrus fruits: lemon, clementine, orange, grapefruit. Their acidic environment and thick skin protect the vitamin. Consume their juice during the day rather than in the morning on an empty stomach, because their acidity puts a strain on the stomach.

Health Education Council:

This medication is intended to alleviate a temporary state of fatigue.

It is necessary to distinguish normal physical fatigue occurring as a result of a major effort for example and asthenia which is fatigue outside of any effort.

· Fatigue arising from physical exertion is normal: rest is enough to make it disappear.

· Fatigue that does not give in to rest or asthenia is the feeling of not being able to provide an effort before it even began. This fatigue can be the consequence of overwork, of a disease.

Some medications may also cause unusual fatigue: read the package leaflet for medications you are taking and ask for advice from your pharmacist or doctor. But in many cases no precise cause is found.

Fatigue can be manifested by very variable symptoms. This can be a general impression of weakness. But sometimes symptoms can be associated with it such as sleep disorders (insomnia, restless sleep, ...), intellectuals (difficulties of concentration, memory and attention ...), sexual (decreased desire ...) of the character (irritability, pessimism, sadness, demotivation ...).

You can reduce your fatigue by respecting as much as possible the following tips:

· Rest, relax, look for the reasons for your fatigue.

· Practice regular and appropriate physical activity.

· Have a balanced diet (especially avoid alcohol, tobacco, stimulants).

· Find your sleeping rhythm (regular bedtime and sufficient sleeping time).

Seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor in the following cases:

· No improvement after 1 month of treatment.

· Increased feeling of fatigue during treatment.

· Occurrence of new symptoms or unusual symptoms.

GLOSSARY (summary)

alcohol
General name designating a family of substances which have the property of being able to be mixed with water and fatty substances. The most common alcohol is ethyl alcohol (ethanol), but there are many other alcohols: methanol, butanol, etc. The degree of alcoholic solution corresponds to the volume of pure alcohol present in 100 ml of solution, knowing that 1 glass of wine or 1/2 of beer (25 cl) contains about 8 g of alcohol.
When alcohol is used as an antiseptic, an unpleasant odor denaturant is often added to prevent drinking. Contrary to a widespread belief, alcohol at 70o (or even at 60o) is a better antiseptic than alcohol at 90o.

antecedent
Affection healed or always in evolution. The antecedent may be personal or family. The background is the history of a person's health.

functional asthenia
General fatigue without detectable organ disease. It can occur during convalescence of an illness or during some stress.

deficiency
Deficit usually involving nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. A diversified diet is the best prevention of deficiencies.

G6PD
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, an enzyme normally present in the red blood cell. His congenital absence (deficiency) is responsible for a disease called favism; it prohibits the use of certain drugs.

metabolism
All the transformation actions carried out by the organization, resulting in the creation of energy or the development of various substances. Anabolism (metabolism of manufacture) is distinguished from catabolism (degradation metabolism).

phenylketonuria
An inherited disease that is characterized by the absence of an enzyme and that leads to the accumulation in the blood of a toxic product. Screening is systematic at birth. Treatment is based on a specific diet during early childhood.

salt
Chemical substance of which the best known is sodium chloride, or table salt. The diet salt does not contain sodium; this is generally replaced by potassium.

treatment
Treatment that complements the action of a specific treatment, but generally does not achieve healing on its own.
